Joan Chandos Baez (Staten Island, 9 de janeiro de 1941) é uma cantora norte-americana de música folk, conhecida pelo seu estilo vocal distinto e opiniões políticas apresentadas abertamente.

Joan Baez foi compositora e intérprete de música popular desde o início dos anos 60 até aos dias atuais. Baez é a irmã mais velha de Mimi Farinia, com quem compartilhou a paixão pela composição e a sua visibilidade como ativista política, embora Farinia o fizesse sem muito alarde e sem tanta observação pública como Baez, durante o tempo que estava viva.

A carreira profissional de Baez começou em 1959 no "Newport Folk Festival", onde, com 18 anos, foi a grande revelação. Ela lançou pela Vanguard Records, no ano seguinte, o seu álbum de estreia, "Joan Baez", uma coleção de baladas tradicionais que vendeu moderadamente bem, chamando a atenção pela qualidade do reportório e pelo seu talento na viola acústico, aliado à sua bela voz de soprano. O álbum seguinte, "Joan Baez, Vol. 2", foi lançado em 1961. Ganhou um disco de ouro, o mesmo acontecendo com "Joan Baez in Concert", de 1962. Com apresentações regulares, Joan Baez tornou-se um fenómeno artístico. Em 1963, já era considerada uma das cantoras mais populares dos Estados Unidos. Em 1964 lança o disco Joan Baez/5, incorporando neste trabalho uma seleção de populares canções folk dos Estados Unidos e da América Latina, com destaque para interpretações de composições dos músicos brasileiros Villa-Lobos e Zé do Norte. Além de folk tradicional e canções de protesto, ajudou a promover Bob Dylan, impressionada com as suas composições iniciais e incluindo várias delas em seu reportório. Acabaram tornando-se namorados algum tempo, mas o relacionamento acabou em 1965. Assim como Dylan, Baez foi influenciada pela apelidada invasão britânica e passou a usar, ainda que discretamente, acompanhamento elétrico, além da sua viola a partir de "Farewell Angelina", de 1965, pouco tempo depois de Dylan começar a experimentar o folk rock. No final dos anos 60, Baez namorou com a poesia (lançando o livro "A Journey Through Our Time") e com a música country (com "One day at time", de 1968). No ano seguinte, lançaria um álbum duplo inteiramente dedicado às canções de Bob Dylan, "Any day now". Também tocou em Woodstock, numa época em que estava inteiramente envolvida na luta contra a Guerra do Vietname.

Em 1968 ela casou com David Harris, um proeminente opositor da Guerra do Vietname, que seria preso no mesmo ano. Harris, fã de música country, fez com que Baez fosse mais influenciada pelo country rock, começando com "David's Album", de 1970 e culminando com o duplo "Blessed are", de 1971, seu último disco pelo selo Vanguard. A sua versão de "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" da The Band foi um sucesso, entrando para o Top Ten americano.

Baez foi para a A&M Records em 1972, lançando "Come From The Shadows", um álbum explicitamente político, com ácidas críticas ao Vietname. Após o álbum "Heres to life" (1974), gravado em espanhol, com canções latino-americanas, ela passou a piscar o olho ao pop e a investir nas suas próprias músicas, culminando com o elogiado "Diamonds & Rust", em 1975, o seu disco de maior sucesso nos anos 70. Em 1976, voltou a apresentar-se com Bob Dylan e gravou um álbum duplo ao vivo "From every stage", onde demonstrava a sua permanente empatia com o seu público. No final dos anos 70, ela mudou brevemente para a CBS Records, lançando "European Tour" em 1980, um disco ao vivo, acústico, que marca um retorno a certa simplicidade musical e talvez, ao melhor formato artístico para o seu estilo. Nos anos 80, Joan Baez continuou a se apresentar com frequência, mantendo um público fiel, mas deixou de gravar discos em grandes gravadoras, registando o seu repertório de forma esporádica por pequenos selos e gravadoras independentes.

Joan Baez cantou duas canções que fazem parte da banda sonora do filme Silent Running (Corrida Silenciosa), do diretor Douglas Trumbull (o mesmo responsável pelos efeitos especiais de "2001: uma odisseia no espaço", de Stanley Kubrick). O filme é de 1971 e é uma ficção científica ecológica. As músicas são: "Rejoice on the Sun" e "Silent Running"

Nos anos 90, apesar dessas mudanças constantes de gravadora, Baez continuou a lançar os seus álbuns. O CD "Ring them bells", de 1996, foi considerado o melhor trabalho de folk contemporâneo do ano, por revistas especializadas no género. O seu último foi "Dark Chords on a Big Guitar", de 2003, após alguns anos sem gravar.

Joan vive atualmente em Woodside, Califórnia.

Em 2008, Joan Baez comemorou os cinquenta anos da sua carreira musical com turnês pelos Estados Unidos e Europa. Também lançou o CD Day After Tomorrow, de 2008, produzido pelo cantor e compositor Steve Earle. O CD marcou o regresso de Joan ao Top 200 da Billboard, alcançando na semana de lançamento do álbum a posição n.º 128.

James Patrick "Jimmy" Page (Heston, 9 de janeiro de 1944), é um musico, produtor musical e compositor inglês, que alcançou sucesso internacional como o lendário guitarrista da banda de rock Led Zeppelin.

  

 
Page começou a sua carreira como músico de estúdio em Londres e, em meados da década de 60, tornou-se o guitarrista de sessão mais procurado no Reino Unido. Ele foi um membro dos Yardbirds de 66 a 68 e, posteriormente, fundou os Led Zeppelin, em 1968.

   

 
Page é amplamente considerado como um dos melhores e mais influentes guitarristas de todos os tempos. A revista Rolling Stone descreve-o como o "pontífice dos riffs" e classificou-o em terceiro lugar na lista dos "100 Maiores Guitarristas de Todos os Tempos". Em 2010 foi classificado em segundo lugar na lista dos "50 Melhores Guitarristas de Todos os Tempos". Ele foi colocado duas vezes no Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: uma como um membro dos Yardbirds, em 1992, e uma segunda vez como membro dos Led Zeppelin, em 1995. Page foi uma inspiração para o estilo de guitarra descendente de Johnny Ramone, dos Ramones. Ramone descreveu Page como "provavelmente o maior guitarrista que já existiu". Page foi descrito pela Uncut como "o maior e mais misterioso herói da guitarra no rock". A revista Los Angeles Times considerou Jimmy Page como o segundo maior guitarrista de todos os tempos.

Gerry Rafferty morreu há treze anos...

 

    

Gerald "Gerry" Rafferty (Paisley, 16 de abril de 1947 - Bournemouth, 4 de janeiro de 2011) foi um cantor, compositor e músico escocês, de raízes irlandesas, que morreu de insuficiência hepática, causada pelo seu alcoolismo. Estava acompanhado pela sua filha Martha no momento do falecimento, na sua casa.

     

Carreira

Ele começou como músico de rua. O seu primeiro grupo foi a banda Humblebums, de seguida, lançou um álbum a solo e, em 1972, formou um novo grupo, os Stealers Wheel, ao lado de Joe Egan. Em 1975, o grupo desfez-se e Rafferty continuou com os álbuns a solo. A canção mais conhecida dele é "Baker Street, incluído no disco "City to city", de 1978. Outra sua música conhecida é Stuck In The Middle With You, composta por Rafferty para os Stealers Wheel, e que fez parte da banda sonora do filme de Quentin Tarantino, Cães Danados.

John Paul Jones, nome artístico de John Baldwin (Sidcup, 3 de janeiro de 1946) é um multi-instrumentista, baixista e teclista britânico. Jones ganhou notoriedade por ser o baixista, teclista e um dos membros dos Led Zeppelin até ao desaparecimento da banda, após a morte de John Bonham, em 1980.

Buffett was known for his tropical rock sound and persona, which often portrayed a lifestyle described as "island escapism" and promoted enjoying life and following passions. n May 2023, Buffett was hospitalized to "address some issues that needed immediate attention" and rescheduled tour dates. In late August, he entered hospice care and had a final meeting with family and friends. Buffett died on September 1, 2023, at age 76, at his home in Sag Harbor, New York, due to complications from Merkel-cell carcinoma, a rare and aggressive skin cancer, with which he had been diagnosed four years earlier. Prior to his death, he had kept his illness private and continued to tour while undergoing treatment.

Philip David "Phil" Ochs (El Paso, Texas, December 19, 1940 – Far Rockaway, New York City, April 9, 1976) was an American protest singer (or, as he preferred, a topical singer) and songwriter who was known for his sharp wit, sardonic humor, earnest humanism, political activism, insightful and alliterative lyrics, and distinctive voice. He wrote hundreds of songs in the 1960s and '70s and released eight albums.

Ochs performed at many political events during the 1960s counterculture era, including anti-Vietnam War and civil rights rallies, student events, and organized labor events over the course of his career, in addition to many concert appearances at such venues as New York City's Town Hall and Carnegie Hall. Politically, Ochs described himself as a "left social democrat" who became an "early revolutionary" after the protests at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago led to a police riot, which had a profound effect on his state of mind.

After years of prolific writing in the 1960s, Ochs's mental stability declined in the 1970s. He eventually succumbed to a number of problems including bipolar disorder and alcoholism, and died by suicide in 1976.

Some of Ochs's major musical influences were Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley, Bob Gibson, Faron Young, and Merle Haggard. His best-known songs include "I Ain't Marching Anymore", "Changes", "Crucifixion", "Draft Dodger Rag", "Love Me, I'm a Liberal", "Outside of a Small Circle of Friends", "Power and the Glory", "There but for Fortune", and "The War Is Over".

Harry Chapin nasceu há 81 anos

  

Harold Forster Chapin (New York City, December 7, 1942 – East Meadow, New York, July 16, 1981) was an American singer-songwriter, philanthropist, and hunger activist best known for his folk rock and pop rock songs. He achieved worldwide success in the 1970s. Chapin, a Grammy Award-winning artist and Grammy Hall of Fame inductee, has sold over 16 million records worldwide.

Chapin recorded a total of 11 albums from 1972 until his death in 1981. All 14 singles that he released became hits on at least one national music chart. Chapin's best-known songs include "Taxi" and "Cat's in the Cradle."

As a dedicated humanitarian, Chapin fought to end world hunger. He was a key participant in the creation of the Presidential Commission on World Hunger in 1977. In 1987, Chapin was posthumously awarded the Congressional Gold Medal for his humanitarian work.

In the afternoon of July 16, 1981, Chapin was driving on the Long Island Expressway en route to perform at a free benefit concert at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow, New York, that evening. At 12:27 p.m., Chapin had reportedly put on his emergency flashers, decelerated his vehicle's speed to 15 mph, and had weaved from the far-left lane to the center lane, to the left lane, and then back to the center lane before his vehicle was struck from behind by a semi-trailer truck. The force of the collision crushed the rear of the car, ruptured the fuel tank, and dragged the car several hundred feet on the pavement. Passers-by managed to help the unconscious Chapin out of his engulfed 1975 Volkswagen Rabbit. He was immediately taken by helicopter from the crash site outside Jericho, New York, to the nearby Nassau County Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 1:05 p.m. due to internal bleeding.

Chapin's widow won a $12 million decision in a negligence lawsuit against Supermarkets General, the owners of the truck involved.

Chapin is buried in the Huntington Rural Cemetery in Huntington, New York. His epitaph is taken from his 1978 song "I Wonder What Would Happen to This World":

Cat Stevens lançou o álbum Tea for the Tillerman há 53 anos

Tea for the Tillerman is the fourth studio album by singer-songwriter Cat Stevens, released in 23 November 1970. 

 

Overview

Stevens' second album released during the year 1970, Tea for the Tillerman includes many of his best-known songs such as "Where Do the Children Play?", "Hard Headed Woman", "Wild World", "Sad Lisa", "Into White", and "Father and Son".

Stevens, a former art student, created the artwork featured on the record's cover.

With "Wild World" as an advance single, this was the album that brought Stevens worldwide fame. The album itself charted into the top 10 in the United States.

In November 2008, a "Deluxe Edition" was released featuring a second disc of demos and live recordings. In January 2012, a hi-res 24/192 kHz version was remastered using an Ampex ATR100 and a MSB Technology Studio ADC and released on HDtracks.com.

Fifty years after the original album's release, in September 2020, Stevens remade the album as Tea for the Tillerman², including new lyrics and new instrumentation, and he sings along with his 22-year-old self in "Father and Son". That same year, Tea for the Tillerman was re-released as a 50th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition. Along with five discs, the Super Deluxe Edition also includes a Blu-ray containing music videos, live videos, and audio of the 2020 mixes of the original album, as well as a 12" vinyl record of live recordings by Stevens in 1970 at the Troubadour, Los Angeles.

Gravado quatro meses após ser lançado o primeiro álbum, repetia a fórmula de Please Please Me. Selecionaram-se 7 composições próprias de Lennon/McCartney e incluiu-se novamente 6 covers das prediletas do repertório dos Beatles. George Harrison comparece com uma composição própria "Don't Bother Me" neste trabalho, cuja música mais conhecida acabou por ser "All My Loving".

The Beatles é o décimo álbum dos Beatles, lançado como disco duplo a 22 de novembro de 1968. Este álbum está na lista dos 200 álbuns definitivos no Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

É popularmente conhecido como The White Album (O Álbum Branco), por não ter nome, e ser apenas um fundo branco com o nome da banda em relevo. A capa foi criada pelo artista pop Richard Hamilton e o título original era para ser A Doll’s House, mas uma banda britânica chamada Family, já tinha lançado um álbum com nome similar. Foi o primeiro disco lançado após a morte do manager Brian Epstein.

Em 1997, O Álbum Branco foi nomeado o décimo melhor disco de todos os tempos pela "Music of the Millennium" da Classic FM. Em 1998 a Q Magazine colocou-o em 17° lugar e, em 2000, em 7° lugar. A Rolling Stone colocou-o como o décimo entre 500 álbuns e o canal VH1 no 11° lugar. De acordo com a Associação da Indústria de Discos da América, o disco é 19 vezes disco de platina e o décimo disco mais vendido nos Estados Unidos.
