Ian Astbury (Heswall, 14 de maio de 1962) é um cantor e compositor inglês, mais conhecido como membro fundador e vocalista da banda de rock The Cult.

     

Biografia

Filho de um oficial da marinha mercante britânica, Robert Leighton Astbury, de origem irlandesa, e de Judith Lindsay Astbury, professora de origem escocesa, o seu primeiro instrumento foi o saxofone nas aulas da escola. Começou a seguir a banda punk Crass como roadie, onde aprendeu a tocar bateria e outros instrumentos musicais. O seu primeiro ensaio musical foi cantando covers dos Sex Pistols para tentar ser vocalista da banda Send No Flowers, mas tornou-se vocalista da banda The Cult, que ele próprio formou. Entre 1983–1995 e 1999 até o presente, também faz parte da banda de tributo aos The Doors, Riders On The Storm, que conta com a presença dos membros originais dos The Doors, Ray Manzarek e Robbie Krieger. O vocalista iniciou sua carreira musical aos 20 anos nos anos 80 com a banda The Southern Death Cult. Mais tarde a banda desapareceu e o cantor recrutou Jamie Stewart e Billy Duffy e formaram os Death Cult. Mais tarde a banda passa chamar-se The Cult.

Ian e sua família mudaram-se para Hamilton, em Ontário, no Canadá, em 1973, quando ele tinha 11 anos de idade. Ele viveu lá por cinco anos antes de se mudar novamente para o Reino Unido. O seu pai trabalhou na International Harvester e sua mãe era contadora. Neste curto período de tempo no país, ele desenvolveu um amor pelo Canadá e afirmou em entrevistas que iria seguir os playoffs da Stanley Cup, especialmente se a equipe canadiana estivesse jogando. 

 

Fase Pré Cult

Em 1979, enquanto ainda vivia em Glasgow, enquanto assistia o filme Apocalypse Now, ficou profundamente impressionado com a canção "The End" do The Doors, e que mais tarde ele descreveu como "uma experiência religiosa". Em 1980, ele estava em Liverpool, onde era ativo na cena punk em torno do 'Eric's Club'. Mudou-se para Bradford no final de 1980, onde se tornou membro fundador da banda punk Southern Death Cult, em 1981. Os Southern Death Cult duraram até março de 1983. Juntamente com o guitarrista Billy Duffy, o baixista Jamie Stewart e o baterista Raymond Taylor Smith, Astbury formou uma nova banda, Death Cult, lançado The Death Cult (EP) e posteriormente abandona a palavra Death do nome para se tornarem os The Cult.

 

The Cult 

The Cult iniciaram as suas atividades em 1983. O seu primeiro álbum, Dreamtime foi lançado em 1984, e seguido por Love, em 1985. Love contou com o single She Sells Sanctuary, que os apresentou para um público internacional. No seu terceiro álbum, Electric, The Cult fizeram uma transformação de som hard rock com a ajuda de Rick Rubin. Após o lançamento do álbum Sonic Temple em 1989 e do single Fire Woman, Astbury mudou-se para Los Angeles, Califórnia.

Anos 90

Em 1994, os The Cult voltaram com um álbum sem título e uma mudança de ritmo musical. Seu som hard rock desapareceu, substituído por um interesse crescente de Astbury em música alternativa, moda e letras introspetivas. O álbum auto-intitulado, não foi um sucesso comercial, devido principalmente à falta de apoio de rádio para os álbuns de dois singles ("Coming Down" e "Star"). Para apoiar o álbum eles partiram numa turnê, no Brasil, no entanto, diferenças criativas de Astbury com o guitarrista Duffy atingiram o seu pico.

Inspirado por sua súbita mudança de direção, Astbury logo depois montou um outro grupo e começou a escrever novas músicas. Ele chamou o grupo The Holy Barbarians, e em 1996 a banda lançou o álbum Cream. Embora não tenha sido um sucesso comercial, The Holy Barbarians foi bem recebido por muitos que tinham recuperado o respeito por Astbury como artista. Um aspecto notável da banda foi na pequena Forum Tunbridge Wells, que os viu sendo acompanhado no palco por Vic Reeves para uma versão de clássico "Wildflower" do Cult.

Dificuldades pessoais e uma unidade para mais introspeção levou Astbury para longe de seu novo grupo, como ele começou a trabalhar num álbum solo (eventualmente lançada como Spirit\Light\Speed|Spirit\Light\Speed).

Em 1999, Astbury e Duffy reformam os The Cult. Um novo contrato com a Atlantic Records foi rubricado, e em 2001 veio o lançamento de Beyond Good and Evil. O sucesso de rádio no início foi garantido pelo single "Rise", até que a banda teve uma briga com a Atlantic e terminou todas as promoções comerciais e de reprodução de rádio para o álbum. Astbury descreveu a briga com a gravadora como "destruidora da alma"; então desiludido, ele trouxe os The Cult para outro hiato em 2002. 

 

    

Anos 2000

Astbury, que se assemelhava com o vocalista do The Doors, Jim Morrison, tornou-se vocalista do The Doors do século XXI, em 2002. O grupo apresentava os membros originais dos The Doors, Robby Krieger e Ray Manzarek. Em 2003, Astbury também atuou com os membros sobreviventes dos MC5 no 100 Club, em Londres, antes de finalmente reformar The Cult com Duffy novamente em 2006, para uma série de datas ao vivo e rumores de reedições e outro maior compilação de sucessos nos trabalhos.

Durante o início de 2007, The Cult entraram em estúdio para começar a produção de Born Into This, o primeiro álbum do grupo em seis anos. Também previsto para lançamento foi um DVD da banda de 13 novembro de 2006, concerto no Irving Plaza, em Nova York.

A formação actual dos The Cult consiste em Astbury e Duffy, junto com o baixista Chris Wyse, o baterista John Tempesta e o guitarrista Mike Dimkitch.

Em 2009, os The Cult anunciaram uma série de shows em todo os EUA, Canadá e Europa, anunciado como "'Love' Live", onde a banda tocou seu clássico álbum, "Love", na sua totalidade.

Em 29 de maio de 2010 Boris realizado "The End", com Ian Astbury no Festival Vivid em Sydney.

Ele mora em Los Angeles e apoia a equipa de futebol Hollywood United com Billy Duffy e Steve Jones dos Sex Pistols e é um adepto do  clube inglês Everton FC.

Em 26 de maio de 2012, Astbury casou-se com Aimee Nash, vocalista e guitarrista da banda The Black Ryder, em Las Vegas.

 

Outros empreendimentos musicais

Astbury participa das faixas "Burn My Shadow", "When Things Explode" e "Forever" do UNKLE. Ele também canta "Flame On" no álbum solo de Tony Iommi (guitarrista do Black Sabbath) Iommi, e gravou um dueto com Deborah Harry no seu álbum de 1989, Def, Dumb and Blonde na música "Lovelight".

Em 2010, ele forneceu os vocais para a música "Ghost" no álbum solo homónimo do guitarrista Slash. A faixa também contou com a participação do ex-guitarrista do Guns N 'Roses, Izzy Stradlin, na guitarra base. Astbury também é creditado por tocar bateria numa faixa chamada "Gasp" dos Japanese Cartoon.

Michael Allen Inez (Los Angeles County, California, May 14, 1966) is an American rock musician best known for his role as the bassist of Alice in Chains since 1993. He is also recognized for his work with Ozzy Osbourne from 1989–1993. Inez has also been associated with Slash's Snakepit, Black Label Society, Spys4Darwin, and Heart. He is of filipino descent. Inez has earned seven Grammy Award nominations as a member of Alice in Chains.

 

Mike Inez began his career in music by playing guitar and saxophone. Since the late 1980s, his career has consisted of the role of bass guitarist in popular hard rock bands. 

 

Ozzy Osbourne (1989–1993)

In 1989, more than 50 musicians auditioned for Ozzy Osbourne's group; Inez, then a member of the Los Angeles band Skin on Skin, won the spot of bassist. Within a month, he was playing a live gig with Osbourne at Wembley Stadium.

Inez was an official member of Osbourne's band during their recording of the album No More Tears. However, Bob Daisley was brought in to record the bass and none of Inez's playing is on the final album. In the liner notes Inez was credited as "bass and music inspiration", as he had written the riff to the title track in a jam session. Inez also appeared on the 1993 Osbourne live album Live & Loud. 

 

Alice in Chains (1993–2002)

By January 1993, Inez had moved on to his next project. Alice in Chains bassist Mike Starr had left the group after the release of their album Dirt and Inez replaced him. Inez toured throughout 1993 with Alice in Chains on the strength of the Dirt album. The group also participated in the 1993 Lollapalooza Tour. Alice in Chains' Jar of Flies EP was released in 1994 with Inez on bass. Jar of Flies debuted at #1 on album sales charts, the first EP ever to do so.

Inez recorded with the band for their eponymous 1995 release Alice in Chains, which also debuted at #1. In 1996, Alice in Chains recorded their MTV Unplugged special, the first live performance the group had played together in three years. After their last live performance on July 3, 1996, Alice in Chains went on hiatus. Then in August 1998 Alice in Chains returned to the studio to release the songs "Get Born Again" and "Died". In 1999 the band went on hiatus once again, when rumors of vocalist Layne Staley's drug abuse arose. Alice in Chains officially disbanded on April 20, 2002, after the news of the death of Staley. 

 

Slash's Snakepit (1995)

In 1995, Inez played with Slash on the Guns N' Roses guitarist's side group, Slash's Snakepit. The group recorded It's Five O'Clock Somewhere although Inez did not play any live shows during the corresponding tour. He also briefly rejoined Ozzy Osbourne's band on the Retirement Sucks tour after Geezer Butler resigned due to the pressures of touring. 

 

Jerry Cantrell and Spys4Darwin (1998)

In 1997 Inez played with his Alice in Chains bandmate, Jerry Cantrell, on his debut solo album, Boggy Depot. In the following year, Inez played on the bonus track to Black Label Society's debut album Sonic Brew, a reworked heavy metal cover version of the Osbourne track "No More Tears". At around this time, Inez formed the band Spys4Darwin with Sean Kinney, Chris DeGarmo from Queensrÿche, and Vinnie Dombroski from Sponge. They released the microfish EP, and played radio festivals in the Northwest. 

 

Black Label Society (2001–2004)

In mid-August 2001, Inez temporarily replaced Black Label Society bassist Steve Gibb, who was sent home in the middle of their Ozzfest tour. In 2003, Black Label Society's Robert Trujillo joined Metallica; Inez replaced him in Black Label Society, joining for a short two-week west coast tour of the United States and a short tour of Japan for their The Blessed Hellride album. A few songs from the Tokyo, Japan show of this tour appear in the bonus features section of their live DVD, Boozed, Broozed & Broken-Boned. In 2004, Inez recorded the track "Crazy or High" with Black Label Society for their studio album release Hangover Music Vol. VI. 

 

Heart (2002–2006)

Following Layne Staley's death in April 2002, Inez joined Heart and toured with the band from 2002 through 2006. He appears on Heart's 2003 release, Alive in Seattle, a double CD live recording that documents a 2002 concert at Seattle's Paramount Theatre.

Inez also played bass and tambourine on Heart's 2004 album Jupiters Darling.

 

 

Alice in Chains reunion (2005–present)

 In 2005, Jerry Cantrell, Inez, and Sean Kinney reunited to perform a benefit concert in Seattle for victims of the tsunami disaster that struck South Asia in 2004. By 2006 Inez, along with the surviving members of Alice in Chains, Jerry Cantrell and Sean Kinney, set out for a world tour with various guest singers to fill in for the late Layne Staley. The main singer for the band's tour was William DuVall. The band was also featured on Decades of Rock: Heart and Friends where they performed "Would?" with Phil Anselmo and "Rooster" with William DuVall. DuVall would go on to be made the permanent singer of the group, which has since released three studio albums with Duvall and toured extensively since 2006.

Eric Doyle Mensinger (mais tarde "Eric Singer") é um baterista norte-americano, nascido dia 12 de maio de 1958, em Cleveland, Ohio. Eric é conhecido por ser o atual baterista da banda de hard rock Kiss. 

    

     

Atualmente divide o seu tempo tocando com os Kiss, Alice Cooper e o seu projeto a solo ESP (Eric Singer Project) onde toca com Bruce Kulick (ex-Kiss), John Corabi (ex-Mötley Crüe) e Chuck Garric (Alice Cooper).

John Rutsey, primeiro baterista dos Rush, morreu há dezoito anos...

      

John Howard Rutsey (Ontario, July 23, 1952 – Toronto, May 11, 2008) was a Canadian drummer, best known as a co-founding member of Rush, and performing on the band's debut album. John Rutsey left the band in 1974, due to musical differences and health problems with type 1 diabetes, and was replaced by Neil Peart. Rutsey's type 1 diabetes was believed to be a complicating factor in his death from a heart attack in 2008. Tape-recorded comments from Rutsey are heard in the 2010 documentary Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage, and the DVD release includes two performances with him on drums.

On May 11, 2008, Rutsey died in his sleep of an apparent heart attack, related to complications from diabetes. Rutsey's family wished to keep the funeral a private affair, although donations would be sent to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in Markham, Ontario.

William Thomas Ward, mais conhecido como Bill Ward (Aston, Birmingham, 5 de maio de 1948) é um baterista inglês, sendo o primeiro baterista e um dos fundadores da banda britânica de heavy metal Black Sabbath.

Ficou em 8° lugar na lista dos "50 melhores bateristas de hard rock e metal de todos os tempos" do site Loudwire. Em lista da revista Rolling Stone, Ward ficou na posição 42 dos "100 Maiores Bateristas de Todos os Tempos.

Stephen Maynard Clark (Hillsborough, Sheffield, 23 de abril de 1960 – Londres, 8 de janeiro de 1991) foi um dos guitarristas fundadores da banda de hard rock britânica Def Leppard. Morreu em 1991, de uma overdose acidental de codeína, misturada com Valium, morfina e bebidas alcóolicas. Clark foi classificado em 11º pela Classic Rock Magazine's na lista dos "100 maiores heróis da guitarra".

Mike Portnoy, o baterista dos Dream Theater, faz hoje 59 anos

Mike Portnoy (Nova York, 20 de abril de 1967) é um baterista norte-americano, conhecido principalmente por ter sido o baterista oficial e co-fundador da banda de metal progressivo Dream Theater. Aclamado por ser um baterista extremamente habilidoso, Portnoy ganhou 29 prémios da conceituada revista Modern Drummer. Sendo também a segunda pessoa mais jovem (atrás apenas de Neil Peart) a ser colocada no Modern Drummer's Hall of Fame (aos 37 anos de idade). Mike co-produziu 6 álbuns dos Dream Theater com o também membro e guitarrista da banda, John Petrucci, iniciando com  Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory até Black Clouds and Silver Linings. A partir de A Change of Seasons para a frente, Portnoy escreveu uma significativa quantidade de letras para a banda.

Anthony Philip Harford (Birmingham, 19 de abril de 1957), mais conhecido pelo nome artístico Tony Martin, é um músico e vocalista britânico de heavy metal.

Já fez parte de diversas bandas e projetos musicais, sendo notória a sua passagem pelos Black Sabbath, banda onde permaneceu quase dez anos (é o vocalista com maior tempo de permanência, depois de Ozzy Osbourne).

Apesar de se apresentar exclusivamente como vocalista, Tony Martin é um multi-instrumentista, como confirmou numa entrevista. Entre os instrumentos que toca, podem ser citados: guitarra, baixo, violino, teclado, harmónica, gaita de foles e flauta de pã. Nos seus álbuns a solo, costuma também gravar a maioria dos instrumentos, como por exemplo em Scream, do ano de 2005. A sua primeira aparição como artista a solo foi em 1992, com o disco Back Where I Belong.

Peter Steele morreu há dezasseis anos...

     

Peter Thomas Ratajczyk (Brooklyn, New York, January 4, 1962 – Scranton, Pennsylvania, April 14, 2010), better known by his stage name Peter Steele, was the lead singer, bassist and composer for the gothic metal band Type O Negative. Before forming Type O Negative, he had created the metal group Fallout and the thrash band Carnivore.

As the frontman for Type O Negative, Steele was known for his vampiric effect, towering stature, rich bass-baritone vocals, and a dark, often self-deprecating sense of humor. "His lyrics were often intensely personal, dealing with subjects including love, loss, and addiction." Steele credited Black Sabbath and The Beatles as his key musical inspirations.

Death

Peter Steele died of an aortic aneurysm (initially reported as heart failure) on April 14, 2010 at the age of 48. Prior to his death, Steele was preparing to write and record new music. The remaining members of Type O Negative decided to dissolve the band rather than replace Steele, with Johnny Kelly stating "Even if there is somebody who could take his place it wouldn’t matter. We don’t have any interest in continuing. It’s impossible – it hasn't even come up in any kind of discussion. When Peter died, Type O Negative died with him." On November 21, 2011, an oak tree was planted in Prospect Park to commemorate Steele.

Black Rose: A Rock Legend is the ninth studio album by Irish rock band Thin Lizzy. Released in 13 April 1979, it has been described as one of the band's "greatest, most successful albums". It was the first time that blues rock guitarist Gary Moore remained in Thin Lizzy long enough to record an album - after previous brief stints in 1974 and 1977 with the band. The album peaked at No. 2 on the UK charts - making it the band's highest-charting album in the UK. It was their fourth consecutive album to be certified Gold by the BPI.

Cozy Powell morreu há vinte e oito anos...

 

Cozy Powell (Cirencenter, Gloucestershire, 29 de dezembro de 1947 - Bristol, 5 de Abril de 1998) foi um famoso e aclamado baterista britânico.

Muito solicitado em gravações de pop e rock, Cozy Powell foi quase uma lenda no estilo pesado de tocar bateria, tocando ao lado de nomes como Rainbow, Whitesnake, Mickie Most, Black Sabbath, Keith Emerson, Greg Lake (Emerson, Lake & Powell), ou mesmo no seu trabalho a solo, como o single "Dance with the Devil", que foio seu maior hit no Reino Unido, em 1974.

Powell começou a sua carreira profissional em 1965 com os The Sorcerers, eventualmente tocando com Jeff Beck, depois que este deixou os Yardbirds. Em 1971, formou a banda Bedlam, chegando a lançar um álbum, mas abandonou este projeto para produzir singles, como o "Dance with the Devil", faixa instrumental que chegou à 3ª posição no Reino Unido em 1974. Mais tarde ele formou os Cozy Powell's Hammer, que acabaram em 1975. Nesse mesmo ano juntou-se aos Rainbow, do guitarrista Ritchie Blackmore, ficando até 1980. Sempre muito requisitado, ele alternava os seus trabalhos entre sessões de estúdio e concertos ao vivo com uma grande variedade de bandas como os Michael Schenker Group, Whitesnake e Black Sabbath, nunca permanecendo em nenhuma banda durante muito tempo. Em 1996, ele trabalhou numa longa turnê com os Fleetwood Mac.

Em abril de 1998, Cozy Powell havia abandonado uma turnê com Yngwie Malmsteen, por se ter magoado no pé. Pouco depois, a 5 de abril, Cozy morreu num acidente de automóvel enquanto dirigia o seu carro, um Saab 9000, a cerca de 170 km/h,  com chuva, na Auto Estrada M4, próximo da cidade de Bristol, na Inglaterra. De acordo com uma reportagem da BBC, no momento do acidente o nível alcoólico de Cozy estava acima do limite legal. Ele não usava cinto de segurança e estava a conversar com a sua então namorada, Sharon Reeve, ao telemóvel, quando ela ouviu o barulho do acidente.
