Liz Mitchell, cantora dos Boney M., nasceu há 74 anos

Elizabeth Rebecca Mitchell (Clarendon, British Jamaica, 12 July 1952) is a Jamaican-British singer, best known as one of the original singers of the 1970s disco/reggae band Boney M.

Mitchell was born in Clarendon Parish, Jamaica. At the age of eleven, Mitchell and her family emigrated to London, England, in 1963; her childhood home was in the district of Harlesden. By the end of the decade, she auditioned for Hair and eventually moved to West Berlin to join the German cast where she replaced Donna Summer. After Hair, Mitchell joined the Les Humphries Singers for a few years and represented West Germany at the Eurovision Song Contest with the Ralph Siegel title "Sing Sang Song". The band was then reduced to only six singers (Liz was not one of them) for the show (their usual line-ups consisted of 20 performers and up) and came in 15th place with only 12 points, which they regarded as their beginning of the end as a band.  

A phone call from Katja Wolff agency in February 1976 persuaded Mitchell to return to West Germany to join a new group being assembled by record producer Frank Farian which would become known as Boney M. Though the group's initial purpose was simply to lip-synch for TV and discothèque performances of Farian's song "Baby Do You Wanna Bump", Boney M. soon became a legitimate recording group with Mitchell, Marcia Barrett, and producer Farian as the vocal core. Mitchell became widely regarded as Boney M.'s lead vocalist.

Boney M. disbanded in 1986.

After the group split up shortly after their 10th anniversary in 1986, fellow group member Bobby Farrell convinced Mitchell, Maizie Williams and a replacement for Marcia Barrett to re-group for a tour in 1987. A recording contract for the group was also arranged. When Farrell and the replacement singer failed to show up for the rehearsals, Mitchell and Williams recruited singer Celena Duncan and dancer Curt Dee Daran for the tour. As Williams had never sung on Boney M.'s recordings, Mitchell ended up recording the scheduled album on her own.

However, it proved difficult for Mitchell to find a record label to release the album, entitled No One Will Force You. It was released in Spain in the Autumn of 1988, supported by the singles "Mandela" (a re-work of Boney M.'s 1979 hit "El Lute") and "Niños De La Playa" (Children of the Beach). The latter was also released on Mega Records in Scandinavia where the group did a tour in October. By this point, Williams had been replaced by Carol Grey.

At the same time, Simon Napier-Bell had produced a remix album of Boney M.'s greatest hits and wanted the original line-up to promote it. Mitchell reluctantly accepted the offer and Boney M. appeared together again on German and Dutch TV, even though Mitchell's new line-up still had gigs to play.^{[citation needed]}

The success of the remix album led Mitchell to sign her album for a French and Dutch release in 1989, and due to personal differences within the group, she eventually decided to focus on her solo career. Even though Madeleine Davis took her place in the group, Farian eventually called Mitchell back for a second remix album by the end of 1989 and also had her front a new Boney M. line-up for the single, "Stories", as an answer-back to an unofficial Boney M. single, "Everybody Wants to Dance Like Josephine Baker", recorded by the other three with Madeleine Davis, without Farian's approval.

In 1990, Mitchell re-formed her 1988 line-up with Patricia Foster replacing Celena Duncan and kept touring the cabaret circuit. In April 1991, she released the single "Mocking Bird", produced by longtime Boney M. collaborator, Helmut Rulofs to minimal attention. After three dire years, the success of Boney M. Gold - 20 Super Hits boosted the career of her line-up, entitled 'Boney M. feat. Liz Mitchell', and they were officially approved by Farian to promote the album and the accompanying singles. For the follow-up More Gold - 20 Super Hits Vol. II, Mitchell recorded four new songs. No One Will Force You with two previously unreleased tracks from 1984 was also re-released in Denmark, five years after it was recorded.

In 1996, Mitchell and her husband Thomas Pemberton built the Dove House Studios and formed Dove House Records. With a newly founded fan club, Mitchell recorded an EP with four Christmas songs as a special Christmas gift for her fans.

In November 1999, Mitchell finally released her album Share the World, which had taken three years to complete. In November 2000, she released the seasonal album Christmas Rose which consisted of partly new material, including the title track, "Lord's Prayer" and "I Want to Go to Heaven" co-written by herself, part re-recordings of Boney M.'s Christmas Album.

Mitchell, now a born-again Christian, continued the inspirational path on Let It Be, her fourth solo album, released in November 2004. Just a few months later, the album Liz Mitchell Sings the Hits of Boney M., recorded in Prague, backed by a Czech symphony orchestra, was released. A song recorded in 2006, called "A Moment Of Love", can be found on the compilation album, The Magic of Boney M..

She is still touring, billed as Boney M. featuring Liz Mitchell.

In 2014 an English Heritage blue plaque was unveiled at Mitchell's childhood home on Wrottesley Road in Harlesden, London, where her father still resided at this time. Mitchell now resides in Caversham, Reading.

Mitchell was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2024 Birthday Honours for services to music and to charity.

William Harrison Withers, Jr. (Slab Fork, 4 de julho de 1938 - Los Angeles, 30 de março de 2020) conhecido pelo seu nome artístico de Bill Withers, foi um cantor e compositor norte-americano de blues e soul que atuou e gravou de 1970 a 1985. Gravou vários sucessos importantes, incluindo "Lean on Me", "Ain't No Sunshine", "Use Me", "Just the Two of Us", "Lovely Day" e "Grandma's Hands". Withers ganhou três Grammy Awards e foi indicado para mais quatro. A sua vida foi o tema do documentário Still Bill, de 2009. Ele foi introduzido no Rock and Roll Hall of Fame em 2015.

Vida

Withers era o benjamim de seis irmãos, nascidos na pequena cidade de minas de carvão de Slab Fork, Virgínia Ocidental. Withers tinha treze anos de idade quando o seu pai morreu. Gago, foi criado pela sua avó em grande parte da infância. Alistou-se na Marinha dos Estados Unidos aos dezoito anos, onde esteve durante nove anos, período em que demonstrou interesse em cantar e escrever músicas. Dispensado da Marinha em 1965, mudou para Los Angeles em 1967 para tentar uma carreira musical. Só alcançou o objetivo quatro anos depois, quando lançou o seu primeiro disco, Just as I Am, que inclui hits como "Grandma's Hands" e "Ain't No Sunshine". Lançou mais seis álbuns em sete anos e afastou-se dos palcos, continuando a atuar como compositor.

As suas canções foram interpretadas por artistas como Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin, Barbra Streisand, Diana Ross, Tom Jones, Paul McCartney, Sting e Mick Jagger e apareceram no cinema e na TV, sendo banda de filmes como Beleza americana, O guarda-costas e Jerry Maguire, entre outros. Em 2015, foi incluído no Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Withers morreu no dia 30 de março de 2020 devido a problemas cardíacos, aos 81 anos. Sobreviveram-lhe a sua mulher, Marcia, e dois filhos, Todd e Kori.

Florence Glenda Ballard-Chapman (Detroit, 30 de junho de 1943 – Detroit, 22 de fevereiro de 1976) foi uma cantora norte-americana, mais conhecida como a fundadora (e durante um curto período de tempo, vocalista principal) da banda feminina da Motown Records The Supremes, da qual foi afastada no ano de 1967 e substituída por Cindy Birdsong.

Depois de se retirar da banda The Supremes, em 1967, Ballard tentou uma carreira a solo bem sucedida com a ABC Records, mas foi retirada do catálogo da gravadora no final daquela década. Ballard lutou contra o alcoolismo, depressão e pobreza durante três anos. Ela tentava um regresso à música quando morreu, de paragem cardíaca, em fevereiro de 1976, com 32 anos de idade. A morte de Ballard foi considerado por um crítico como "uma das maiores tragédias do rock".

Ballard foi postumamente colocada no Hall da Fama do Rock & Roll, como membro das The Supremes, em 1988.

His commercial peak came with the 1969 album Happy Sad, reaching No. 81 on the charts, while his experimental 1970 album Starsailor went on to became a cult favorite. The latter contained his best known song, "Song to the Siren." Buckley died at the age of 28 from a heroin and morphine overdose, leaving behind sons Taylor and Jeff.

Leee John, dos Imagination, faz hoje 69 anos

    

Leslie McGregor "Leee" John (Hackney, London, 23 June 1957) is an English musician, singer and actor of St Lucian descent. He rose to fame as the lead singer of the soul band Imagination, which had three UK top 10 hits in the early 1980s. He is known for his falsetto voice and his flamboyant sense of fashion and outfits.

 

Early life and beginnings

John was born in Hackney, London, and educated in New York City, later studying drama at the Anna Scher Theatre School.

His mother is Jessie Stevens MBE SLPM (born 1927), who moved with her then husband from St. Lucia to Britain in 1955. She is the first black woman to have worked at Companies House. Part of the Windrush Generation, she is a well-known figure in the St Lucian community and she received a MBE from Queen Elizabeth in 1982, after having worked in the Haringey Police Liaison Group, which helped facilitate relations between the police and the community.

John, then a young child, moved to New York City with his father, after his parents’ divorce. Despite signing, aged 10 or 11, to a record label and notably working as a background singer for The Delfonics, the Chairmen of the Board, The Velvelettes and The Elgins, he moved back as a teenager to England to live with his mother. His father didn’t really support his musical ambitions and rather wanted John to continue studying. While in college, he recorded an album for EMI with family friend Russel Fraser (under the name Russ and Leee), but only had very little success.

 

Career

John was still working as a backing singer when he met Ashley Ingram (born 27 November 1957, Northampton, England) a guitarist/bassist. They formed a songwriting partnership, working in a short-lived band called Fizzz. Together with Ingram and Errol Kennedy (born 9 June 1953, Montego Bay, Jamaica) they formed Imagination, a three-piece soul music band, in the early 1980s. The band was named after Imagine, the John Lennon song, whom had died a year earlier. The band worked with Grammy-winning record producer Trevor Horn, which had them discovered by the production duo Jolley & Swain. The duo produced their hit "Body Talk" reached number 4 in the UK Singles Chart in May 1981. Their biggest hit, "Just an Illusion", peaked at number 2 in March 1982. The trio frequently appeared on Top of the Pops and other pop music programmes. Imagination released 7 albums in total, the most famous being first 3: Body Talk (1981), In the Heat of the Night (1982) and Scandalous (1983).

Despite not being an actor, John made a guest appearance in the Doctor Who story Enlightenment in 1983, playing the character Mansell; he replaced actor David Rhule, who had dropped out at short notice due to an industrial strike at the BBC after the rehearsals had begun. The group's fortunes waned but they continued to perform, tour and record until the early 1990s. John went back to acting, but in 2003 resurfaced in the reality television show Reborn in the USA, alongside other singers such as Elkie Brooks and Tony Hadley.

He released a number of dance singles in the late 1990s and early 2000s, including the UK garage and house tracks "Your Mind, Your Body, Your Soul" on Locked On Records and "U Turn Me" with Ten City vocalist Byron Stingily (2000). Under the artist name Johnny X, he also co-wrote and performed vocals on "Call on Me" which was released on Higher State. In 2005, John released a jazz album, Feel My Soul, on Candid Records, featuring a mixture of jazz standards and original compositions. Since the album's release, John has been touring the UK and Europe with his jazz quartet, as well as performing with Imagination.

John is an ambassador for SOS Children's Villages, an international orphan charity providing homes and mothers for orphaned and abandoned children. He supports the charity's annual World Orphan Week campaign which takes place each February. In 2012, he performed at the Leicester Square Theatre. Special guests included Mike Lindup from Level 42.

In 2020, John appeared on the track "The Lost Chord" by Gorillaz for their Song Machine project, which was followed by the album Song Machine, Season One: Strange Timez.

In 2023, Leee John and his mother, Jessie Stephens, were invited, alongside celebrities such as Raymond Blanc and Jay Blades, to King Charles' birthday celebration, at Highgrove House.

Seu álbum de estreia, Rockferry, lançado em 2008, alcançou o topo da parada de álbuns do Reino Unido e tornou-se o álbum mais vendido na Grã-Bretanha naquele ano, com 1,68 milhão de cópias vendidas. O álbum recebeu diversos certificados de Platina e vendeu mais de 7 milhões de cópias em todo o mundo. O single principal "Mercy", se tornou um sucesso mundial, alcançou o topo da parada de singles do Reino Unido, e tornou Duffy a primeira mulher galesa a alcançar o número um na UK Singles Chart, desde Bonnie Tyler com "Total Eclipse of the Heart", em 1983.

Em 2009, Duffy recebeu o Grammy de Melhor Álbum Pop Vocal por Rockferry, e também foi indicada a outras duas categorias da premiação. Estreou no cenário da música no início da década de 80 e obteve sucesso com o lançamento de She's So Unusual (1983), que ganhou 6 discos de platina nos Estados Unidos por vendas de seis milhões de cópias no país. O álbum também entrou para a lista dos "500 Melhores Álbuns de Todos os Tempos" da revista Rolling Stone e está em exposição no Rock And Roll Hall of Fame. O disco fez de Cyndi a primeira mulher a ter quatro singles de um mesmo álbum no Top 10 da parada de sucessos da revista americana Billboard e esse recorde apenas foi quebrado por Christina Aguilera com o seu primeiro álbum. Richard Bell (Toronto, 5 de março de 1946 - Toronto, 15 de junho de 2007) foi um músico canadiano. Ficou conhecido pelos seus desempenhos ao vivo. É, talvez, melhor recordado como o pianista de Janis Joplin e a sua Full Tilt Boogie Band. Foi ainda teclista com The Band durante a década de 90.
