Street Songs is the fifth studio album by American musician Rick James, released in April 1981 on Gordy Records. "Give It to Me Baby", the lead single from the album, became James' second number one single on the R&B chart, spending five weeks at the top spot. The fifth song on the album, "Super Freak", was also one of James' biggest hits. A Deluxe Edition was released in 2001 containing an additional 17 mixes and live versions of the album tracks. Although the song "Fire and Desire" (a duet he performed with singer Teena Marie) was not originally released as a single, the song itself received much airplay on R&B radio stations and has since become a classic hit (James and Marie would reunite to perform the song at the 2004 BET Awards 5 weeks before James' death).

He is best remembered for his Norman Whitfield-produced Motown singles of the 1970s, most notably the number-one hit "War".

Born in Nashville and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, he later lived in Detroit while singing for Ric-Tic and Motown Records. He was backed by the band that became known as "Black Merda". Hawkins and Veasey of the group played on most of his early hits on the Ric Tic Label. Starr's songs "Twenty-Five Miles" and "Stop the War Now" were also major successes, in 1969 and 1971 respectively. In the 1970s Starr moved to England, where he continued to produce music and resided until his death.

Tracy Chapman (Cleveland, Ohio, 30 de março de 1964) é uma cantora de folk, blues e soul norte-americana, vencedora por diversas vezes do Grammy Awards, tornada mundialmente famosa pelas suas canções como "Fast Car", "Baby Can I Hold You" e "Give Me One Reason".

 

Biografia

Tracy Chapman toca guitarra e escreve canções desde criança. Ingressou no programa "A Better Chance", voltado para identificar nacionalmente crianças negras talentosas para o desenvolvimento académico, o que lhe permitiu frequentar a Wooster School, em Connecticut e posteriormente a Tufts University, em Medford (Massachussets).

Em maio de 2004, a Tufts University concedeu-lhe o título de doutora honoris causa em Belas-artes, por sua contribuição como uma artista socialmente engajada e por suas realizações artísticas. A sua voz, por ser bastante grave, é por vezes confundida com uma voz masculina. Chapman apresenta-se em público desde 1988.

 
Carreira

Ainda durante a faculdade, Chapman começou a apresentar-se nas ruas, tocando a sua viola em cafés de Cambridge, Massachussets. Enquanto esperava a sua formatura, assinou contrato com a SBK Records, em 1988, lançando o seu primeiro álbum, intitulado "Tracy Chapman", foi logo aclamado pela crítica e ela passou a realizar tournês e conquistar o público. Após a sua aparição num programa de TV, em homenagem dos setenta anos de Nelson Mandela, em junho, a sua música "Fast Car" alcançou o topo das paradas nos Estados Unidos, ficando entre as 10 mais executadas da lista da Billboard Hot 100, enquanto outras faixas também ficavam entre as mais ouvidas, com "Baby Can I Hold You" entre estas.

O disco vendeu bem, alcançando vários certificados de vendagem da RIAA (discos de platina), e fazendo-a vencer no ano seguinte (1989) quatro Grammy Awards, inclusive a de artista revelação.

Chapman tornou-se, depois disto, uma artista ligada à Amnistia Internacional, participando da tour "Human Rights Now!". Segundo algumas fontes, Chapman tornou-se uma das mais influentes artistas no meio universitário norte-americano, nos anos 80.

O seu álbum seguinte, Crossroads (1989), não teve o mesmo sucesso comercial. Em 1992, quando lançou seu trabalho seguinte - Matters of the Heart - o seu público era restrito a fãs dedicados. Apesar de todos acreditarem ter encerrado a sua carreira, surpreendeu os analistas em 1995, com New Beginning, que vendeu mais de 3 milhões de cópias apenas nos EUA, e rendeu-lhe um Grammy, em 1997, de melhor canção de rock.

Em 2000 Telling Stories foi um álbum com músicas mais voltadas para o rock que para o estilo pop, que até ali seguia. A música-título do disco foi bastante executada nas rádios europeias, e em alguns segmentos norte-americanos. Em 2001 veio uma coletânea, batizada de Collection.

O sexto álbum de inéditas foi Let It Rain, de 2002, que Chapman divulgou em tournê pela Europa e EUA em 2003.

Where You Live, sétimo álbum da cantora, foi lançado em setembro de 2005, com o qual realizou excursões pelos Estados Unidos e Europa.

Em 11 de novembro de 2008, na comemoração dos vinte anos do lançamento do seu primeiro disco, Tracy Chapman lançou o seu oitavo álbum, Our Bright Future ("Nosso futuro brilhante"), dando início no dia seguinte, em Bruxelas, a uma turnê europeia. Deste novo álbum destaca-se a música "Thinking of you", já considerada uma das mais belas e sensíveis composições de Chapman.

 

Vida pessoal

Embora Chapman nunca fale publicamente acerca da sua sexualidade, a autora ganhadora do Prémio Pulitzer, Alice Walker, falou da sua relação amorosa com Chapman durante uma entrevista para o The Guardian, a 15 de dezembro de 2006. Ela explicou porque elas não deram publicidade ao relacionamento à época, dizendo que este "era delicioso e adorável, maravilhoso, gostei intensamente. Eu estava completamente apaixonada por ela, mas isso não dizia respeito a mais ninguém além de nós."

Chapman é notoriamente privada quanto à sua vida particular, sendo considerada inclusive reclusa. A despeito disso, em julho de 2010 assumiu um relacionamento com a atriz Guinevere Turner.

Sign o' the Times (often stylized as Sign "☮︎" the Times) is the ninth studio album by American singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Prince. It was first released on March 30, 1987 as a double album by Paisley Park Records and Warner Bros. Records. The album is the follow-up to Parade and is Prince's first solo album following his disbanding of the Revolution. The album's songs were largely recorded during 1986 to 1987 in sessions for releases Prince ultimately aborted: Dream Factory, the pseudonymous Camille, and finally the triple album Crystal Ball. Prince eventually compromised with label executives and shortened the length of the release to a double album.

Many of the drum sounds on Sign o' the Times came from the Linn LM-1 drum machine, and Prince used the Fairlight CMI synthesizer to replace other instruments. Minimal instrumentation is heard on the stripped-down "Sign o’ the Times", the lead single. Four songs contain higher-pitched vocals to represent Prince's alter ego "Camille". The album's music touches on a varied range of styles, including funk, soul, psychedelic pop, electro, and rock.

Sign o' the Times' release was supported by several singles, among them the socially conscious "Sign o' the Times" and "If I Was Your Girlfriend"; in addition to a well-received concert film of the same name. The album peaked at number six on the Billboard 200 and was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) four months after its release. It also reached the top 10 in Austria, France, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, and the UK and number one in Switzerland. "Sign o' the Times", "U Got the Look" and "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man" were all top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100. Following Prince's death in 2016, the album re-entered the Billboard 200 at number 20.

Though not as commercially successful as Purple Rain, Sign o' the Times was Prince's most acclaimed album, being voted 1987's best album in the Pazz & Jop critics poll. Included in many lists of the greatest albums of all time, it has been appraised by many critics as Prince's best album, ahead of Purple Rain. Writing for The Rolling Stone Album Guide (2004), Michaelangelo Matos regarded it as "the most complete example of [Prince's] artistry's breadth, and arguably the finest album of the 1980s". In 2017, the album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

William Harrison Withers, Jr. (Slab Fork, 4 de julho de 1938 - Los Angeles, 30 de março de 2020) conhecido pelo seu nome artístico de Bill Withers, foi um cantor e compositor norte-americano de blues e soul que atuou e gravou de 1970 a 1985. Gravou vários sucessos importantes, incluindo "Lean on Me", "Ain't No Sunshine", "Use Me", "Just the Two of Us", "Lovely Day" e "Grandma's Hands". Withers ganhou três Grammy Awards e foi indicado para mais quatro. A sua vida foi o tema do documentário Still Bill, de 2009. Ele foi introduzido no Rock and Roll Hall of Fame em 2015.

  

Vida

Withers era o mais novo de seis irmãos nascidos na pequena cidade de mineração de carvão de Slab Fork, Virgínia Ocidental. Withers tinha treze anos de idade quando o seu pai morreu. Gago, foi criado pela sua avó em grande parte da infância. Ele alistou-se na Marinha dos Estados Unidos aos dezoito anos, onde esteve durante nove anos, período em que demonstrou interesse em cantar e escrever músicas. Dispensado da Marinha em 1965, mudou-se para Los Angeles em 1967 para tentar uma carreira musical. Só alcançou o objetivo quatro anos depois, quando lançou o seu primeiro disco, Just as I Am, que inclui hits como "Grandma's Hands" e "Ain't No Sunshine". Lançou mais seis álbuns em sete anos e afastou-se dos palcos, continuando a atuar como compositor.

As suas canções foram interpretadas por artistas como Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin, Barbra Streisand, Diana Ross, Tom Jones, Paul McCartney, Sting e Mick Jagger e apareceram no cinema e na TV, sendo banda de filmes como Beleza americana, O guarda-costas e Jerry Maguire, entre outros. Em 2015, foi incluído no Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Withers morreu no dia 30 de março de 2020 devido a problemas cardíacos, aos 81 anos. Sobreviveram-lhe a sua mulher, Marcia, e dois filhos, Todd e Kori.

Recebeu os cognomes de "Rainha do Soul" ou "Dama do Soul". Reconhecida por suas habilidades na música soul e R&B, também é uma adepta de jazz, rock, blues, pop e até mesmo de ópera. Solomon Vincent McDonald Burke (Filadélfia, 21 de março de 1940 - Amesterdão, 10 de outubro de 2010), sendo mundialmente referido como Rei do Rock 'N Soul e Bispo do Soul, foi um cantor e compositor de música soul, gospel e rock americano, reconhecido como um dos músicos mais influentes do século XX, responsável pela introdução de ritmo gospel nas músicas de soul e rock & roll. Vendeu cerca de 17 milhões de álbuns e foi eleito pela revista Rolling Stone o 89º maior artista da música de todos os tempos.

Faleceu de causas naturais não especificadas, sabendo-se que sofria de obesidade mórbida. O cantor tinha 21 filhos, 90 netos e 19 bisnetos. Encontra-se sepultado no Forest Lawn Memorial Park (Hollywood Hills), Los Angeles, Califórnia nos Estados Unidos
