Sign o' the Times (often stylized as Sign "☮︎" the Times) is the ninth studio album by American singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Prince. It was first released on March 30, 1987 as a double album by Paisley Park Records and Warner Bros. Records. The album is the follow-up to Parade and is Prince's first solo album following his disbanding of the Revolution. The album's songs were largely recorded during 1986 to 1987 in sessions for releases Prince ultimately aborted: Dream Factory, the pseudonymous Camille, and finally the triple album Crystal Ball. Prince eventually compromised with label executives and shortened the length of the release to a double album.

Many of the drum sounds on Sign o' the Times came from the Linn LM-1 drum machine, and Prince used the Fairlight CMI synthesizer to replace other instruments. Minimal instrumentation is heard on the stripped-down "Sign o’ the Times", the lead single. Four songs contain higher-pitched vocals to represent Prince's alter ego "Camille". The album's music touches on a varied range of styles, including funk, soul, psychedelic pop, electro, and rock.

Sign o' the Times' release was supported by several singles, among them the socially conscious "Sign o' the Times" and "If I Was Your Girlfriend"; in addition to a well-received concert film of the same name. The album peaked at number six on the Billboard 200 and was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) four months after its release. It also reached the top 10 in Austria, France, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, and the UK and number one in Switzerland. "Sign o' the Times", "U Got the Look" and "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man" were all top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100. Following Prince's death in 2016, the album re-entered the Billboard 200 at number 20.

Though not as commercially successful as Purple Rain, Sign o' the Times was Prince's most acclaimed album, being voted 1987's best album in the Pazz & Jop critics poll. Included in many lists of the greatest albums of all time, it has been appraised by many critics as Prince's best album, ahead of Purple Rain. Writing for The Rolling Stone Album Guide (2004), Michaelangelo Matos regarded it as "the most complete example of [Prince's] artistry's breadth, and arguably the finest album of the 1980s". In 2017, the album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

A cantora Nena comemora hoje 66 anos

 

Nena, nome artístico de Gabriele Susanne Kerner (Hagen, 24 de março de 1960) é uma cantora pop e atriz alemã que ficou internacionalmente conhecida, na década de 80, pela música 99 Luftballons.

A letra de "99 Luftballons" foi idealizada pelo guitarrista da banda, Carlo Karges. A ideia surgiu quando ele assistiu a um show dos Rolling Stones em 1982, em Berlim Ocidental e viu vários balões subirem ao céu. Então ele imaginou o que seria se os balões voassem sobre a fronteira que dividia a cidade e fossem para Berlim Oriental, gerando lá uma reação paranoica.

A canção crítica a Guerra Fria e ficou no topo das paradas de sucesso em diversos países. Foi número um em Portugal, na Suécia, na Polónia, no México, no Canadá e na Austrália. Nos Estados Unidos, a versão alemã atingiu o segundo lugar na parada da Billboard. O sucesso de Nena ganhou novas versões, sendo inclusive interpretado por um coro infantil no seu CD com canções para crianças. Em inglês, foi gravado por diversas bandas internacionais. Em 2008, foi gravada uma versão em japonês, com o título "99 Love Balloons".

A versão em inglês da música de Nena, "99 Red Balloons", também aparece nos filmes Eurotrip e Os Fura-Casamentos, enquanto a original no filme Watchmen. Em 2017 entrou na banda sonora de Atomic Blonde - Agente Especial, filme baseado na graphic novel The Coldest City, produzido e feito por Charlize Theron. Já a versão gravada pela banda Goldfinger, em 2000, foi usada num jogo de computador.

Rockwell, nome artístico de Kennedy William Gordy, é um cantor afro-americano de Rhythm & Blues (R&B), nascido a 15 de março de 1964, em Detroit, Michigan, nos Estados Unidos.

Rockwell é o filho de Berry Gordy, fundador da gravadora Motown mas, ao contrário do que se poderia pensar, o seu pai não teve influência no contrato do filho. De facto, para evitar a proteção paterna, Rockwell escondeu do pai até ao último momento as suas negociações com a Motown.

Assim, em 1984, Rockwell lança o álbum Somebody's Watching Me, cuja faixa-título contava com a participação dos seus amigos Michael Jackson e Jermaine Jackson nos coros do refrão. Somebody's Watching Me alcançou o Top 10 dos Estados Unidos e na Inglaterra e chegou à posição de número 1 como melhor canção R&B. Neste mesmo álbum, teve muito sucesso com a faixa romântica Knife.

Foi após o estrondoso sucesso de Somebody's Watching Me é que Berry descobriu, ao ver a capa do disco, que o tal Rockwell era o seu próprio filho.

Nik Kershaw (born Nicholas David Kershaw, 1 March 1958, in Ipswich, Suffolk) is an English musician, singer-songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. The former jazz-funk guitarist was a 1980s teen idol. His 62 weeks on the UK Singles Chart in 1984 beat all other solo artists. Kershaw appeared at the dual-venue concert Live Aid in 1985, and has penned a number of hits for other artists, including a UK number one single in 1991 for Chesney Hawkes, "The One and Only". Kershaw is best known for the tracks "I Won't Let the Sun Go Down on Me", "Wouldn't It Be Good" and "The Riddle". Elton John, a friend of Kershaw, has described Kershaw as "one of the best songwriters of a generation".

Estudou no Conservatório de Música de Viena e, antes de obter sucesso internacional, tocava baixo na banda de hard rock austríaca Drahdiwaberl. Como artista a solo, Falco interessava-se pelos sons e ritmos da música rap, tornando-se um dos primeiros na Europa a incorporar tal estilo nas músicas pop e rock. Ele é mais conhecido internacionalmente pela canção "Rock Me Amadeus" (inspirada pelo filme Amadeus) de seu álbum Falco 3, que se tornou um "hit" mundial em 1986, atingindo o número 1 na lista dos singles mais vendidos nos Estados Unidos da Revista Billboard.

Outros hits conhecidos internacionalmente incluem: "Der Kommissar", do seu álbum de 1982 Einzelhaft e "Vienna Calling", de Falco 3. Uma versão em inglês de "Der Kommissar" foi feita pela banda After the Fire, que acabou se tornando um hit ao atingir o top 5 da Revista Billboard em 1983. Steve Perry celebra hoje 77 anos

Steve Perry (nascido Stephen Ray Perry em 22 de janeiro de 1949) é um vocalista e escritor de músicas norte-americano. Perry nasceu em Hanford, Califórnia, e é mais conhecido por ter sido o vocalista da banda Journey de 1977 até 1987 e também de 1995 até 1998.

Steve, que tem ascendência portuguesa, tendo avós que vieram dos Açores (Pico), tem sido muito elogiado e aclamado por ser um compositor, cantor e "entertainer" completo, o que é muito apropriado pois ele foi o vocalista dos Journey.

Nascido e criado em Hanford, aos 18 anos, mudou-se para Los Angeles para correr atrás de seu sonho de tornar-se cantor. Steve trabalhou como engenheiro de som e tocou em várias bandas locais como "The Sullies" e " Ice and Pieces" enquanto esperava pela sua oportunidade na indústria da música.

Em 1977 uma fita demo da sua banda de blues e rock chamada "Alien Project", chegou às mãos de Herbie Herbert, que, coincidentemente, procurava por um vocalista para os Journey. "Alien Project" foi dissolvida quando um de seus integrantes faleceu num acidente de carro; Herbie contactou Steve e em meados de 1977, Steve tornou-se o vocalista dos Journey.

Steve recebeu a alcunha de "The Voice" pelos fãs, críticos e colegas músicos pela voz forte, melodiosa e capaz de atingir notas altas com grande facilidade. Ele toca guitarra, piano e bateria, e cita Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson e Marvin Gaye como a sua inspiração musical.
