Leee John, dos Imagination, faz hoje 69 anos

    

Leslie McGregor "Leee" John (Hackney, London, 23 June 1957) is an English musician, singer and actor of St Lucian descent. He rose to fame as the lead singer of the soul band Imagination, which had three UK top 10 hits in the early 1980s. He is known for his falsetto voice and his flamboyant sense of fashion and outfits.

 

Early life and beginnings

John was born in Hackney, London, and educated in New York City, later studying drama at the Anna Scher Theatre School.

His mother is Jessie Stevens MBE SLPM (born 1927), who moved with her then husband from St. Lucia to Britain in 1955. She is the first black woman to have worked at Companies House. Part of the Windrush Generation, she is a well-known figure in the St Lucian community and she received a MBE from Queen Elizabeth in 1982, after having worked in the Haringey Police Liaison Group, which helped facilitate relations between the police and the community.

John, then a young child, moved to New York City with his father, after his parents’ divorce. Despite signing, aged 10 or 11, to a record label and notably working as a background singer for The Delfonics, the Chairmen of the Board, The Velvelettes and The Elgins, he moved back as a teenager to England to live with his mother. His father didn’t really support his musical ambitions and rather wanted John to continue studying. While in college, he recorded an album for EMI with family friend Russel Fraser (under the name Russ and Leee), but only had very little success.

 

Career

John was still working as a backing singer when he met Ashley Ingram (born 27 November 1957, Northampton, England) a guitarist/bassist. They formed a songwriting partnership, working in a short-lived band called Fizzz. Together with Ingram and Errol Kennedy (born 9 June 1953, Montego Bay, Jamaica) they formed Imagination, a three-piece soul music band, in the early 1980s. The band was named after Imagine, the John Lennon song, whom had died a year earlier. The band worked with Grammy-winning record producer Trevor Horn, which had them discovered by the production duo Jolley & Swain. The duo produced their hit "Body Talk" reached number 4 in the UK Singles Chart in May 1981. Their biggest hit, "Just an Illusion", peaked at number 2 in March 1982. The trio frequently appeared on Top of the Pops and other pop music programmes. Imagination released 7 albums in total, the most famous being first 3: Body Talk (1981), In the Heat of the Night (1982) and Scandalous (1983).

Despite not being an actor, John made a guest appearance in the Doctor Who story Enlightenment in 1983, playing the character Mansell; he replaced actor David Rhule, who had dropped out at short notice due to an industrial strike at the BBC after the rehearsals had begun. The group's fortunes waned but they continued to perform, tour and record until the early 1990s. John went back to acting, but in 2003 resurfaced in the reality television show Reborn in the USA, alongside other singers such as Elkie Brooks and Tony Hadley.

He released a number of dance singles in the late 1990s and early 2000s, including the UK garage and house tracks "Your Mind, Your Body, Your Soul" on Locked On Records and "U Turn Me" with Ten City vocalist Byron Stingily (2000). Under the artist name Johnny X, he also co-wrote and performed vocals on "Call on Me" which was released on Higher State. In 2005, John released a jazz album, Feel My Soul, on Candid Records, featuring a mixture of jazz standards and original compositions. Since the album's release, John has been touring the UK and Europe with his jazz quartet, as well as performing with Imagination.

John is an ambassador for SOS Children's Villages, an international orphan charity providing homes and mothers for orphaned and abandoned children. He supports the charity's annual World Orphan Week campaign which takes place each February. In 2012, he performed at the Leicester Square Theatre. Special guests included Mike Lindup from Level 42.

In 2020, John appeared on the track "The Lost Chord" by Gorillaz for their Song Machine project, which was followed by the album Song Machine, Season One: Strange Timez.

In 2023, Leee John and his mother, Jessie Stephens, were invited, alongside celebrities such as Raymond Blanc and Jay Blades, to King Charles' birthday celebration, at Highgrove House.

Sylvester Stewart (Denton, 15 de março de 1943 – Los Angeles, 9 de junho de 2025), mais conhecido pelo seu nome artístico Sly Stone, foi um dos mais importantes artistas afro-americanos. Músico, compositor e produtor, é mais conhecido pelo seu trabalho como líder dos Sly & the Family Stone, banda crucial na formação da sonoridade do soul, funk e música psicadélica das décadas de 60 e 70. O projeto Sly & the Family Stone foi iniciado em San Francisco, Califórnia. 

A AllMusic afirmou que "James Brown pode ter inventado o funk, mas Sly Stone aperfeiçoou-o", creditando-o por "criar uma série de discos eufóricos, mas politicamente carregados, que provaram ser uma enorme influência em artistas de todas as origens musicais e culturais". A revista Crawdaddy! creditou-o como o fundador do movimento "progressive soul".

Nascido em Denton, Texas, e criado na cidade de Vallejo, na Baía de São Francisco, no norte da Califórnia, Stone dominou vários instrumentos desde cedo e tocou música gospel enquanto criança, com seus irmãos (e futuros colegas de banda) Freddie e Rose. Em meados da década de 60, ele trabalhou tanto como produtor musical para a Autumn Records quanto como disc jockey para a estação de rádio de São Francisco KDIA.  Em 1966, Stone e o seu irmão Freddie uniram as suas bandas para formar Sly and the Family Stone, um grupo racialmente integrado e com membros de ambos os géneros. O grupo obteria sucessos como "Dance to the Music" (1968), "Everyday People" (1968), "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)" (1969), "I Want to Take You Higher" (1969), "Family Affair" (1971) e "If You Want Me to Stay" (1973), além de álbuns aclamados, incluindo "Stand!" (1969), "There's a Riot Goin' On" (1971) e "Fresh" (1973).

Em meados da década de 70, o uso de drogas e o comportamento errático de Stone efetivamente puseram fim ao grupo, levando-o a gravar vários álbuns a solo sem sucesso. Ele fez turnês ou colaborou com artistas como Parliament-Funkadelic, Bobby Womack e Jesse Johnson. Em 1993, foi introduzido no Rock and Roll Hall of Fame como membro do grupo. Ele participou numa homenagem à banda Sly and the Family Stone nos Grammy Awards de 2006, a sua primeira apresentação ao vivo desde 1987.

Stone lançou a sua autobiografia, "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin", em 2023. Stone morreu no dia 9 de junho de 2025, aos 82 anos, vítima de DPOC (Doença Pulmonar Obstrutiva Crónica).

Prince Rogers Nelson (Minneapolis, Minnesota, June 7, 1958 – Chanhassen, Minnesota, April 21, 2016) was an American singer, songwriter, musician, record producer and filmmaker.

Born and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Prince was known for his electric work, flamboyant stage presence, extravagant fashion sense and use of makeup, and wide vocal range. His innovative music integrated a wide variety of styles, including funk, rock, R&B, new wave, soul, psychedelia, and pop. He sold over 100 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling music artists of all time. He won eight Grammy Awards, six American Music Awards, a Golden Globe Award, and an Academy Award for the 1984 film Purple Rain. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004.

Prince developed an interest in music as a young child and wrote his first song at the age of seven. He signed a recording contract with Warner Bros. Records at the age of 17, and released his debut album For You in 1978. His 1979 album Prince went platinum, and his next three records—Dirty Mind (1980), Controversy (1981), and 1999 (1982)—continued his success, showcasing his prominently explicit lyrics and blending of funk, dance, and rock music. In 1984, he began referring to his backup band as the Revolution and released Purple Rain, the soundtrack album to his film debut. It quickly became his most critically and commercially successful release, spending 24 consecutive weeks atop the Billboard 200 and selling over 20 million copies worldwide. After releasing the albums Around the World in a Day (1985) and Parade (1986), The Revolution disbanded, and Prince released the double album Sign o' the Times (1987) as a solo artist. He released three more solo albums before debuting The New Power Generation band in 1991.

In 1993, while in a contractual dispute with Warner Bros., he changed his stage name to an unpronounceable symbol, also known as the "Love Symbol", and began releasing new albums at a faster rate to remove himself from contractual obligations. He released five records between 1994 and 1996 before signing with Arista Records in 1998. In 2000, he began referring to himself as "Prince" again. He released 16 albums after that, including the platinum-selling Musicology (2004). His final album, Hit n Run Phase Two, was first released on the Tidal streaming service on December 2015. Five months later, at the age of 57, Prince died of an accidental fentanyl overdose at his Paisley Park recording studio and home in Chanhassen, Minnesota.

William Everett Preston, conhecido artisticamente como Billy Preston (Houston, 2 de setembro de 1946 - Scottsdale, 6 de junho de 2006), foi um músico soul bastante influente nas década de 60 e 70, colaborando com grandes nomes da indústria da música desde então, dentre eles: Nat King Cole, The Beatles, John Lennon, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones, Sammy Davis Jr., Aretha Franklin, The Jackson 5, Quincy Jones, Bob Dylan, Sly & the Family Stone, Jet e Red Hot Chili Peppers, principalmente nos teclados e coros. 

Biografia

Iniciou a sua carreira tocando no conjunto de música gospel de Andraé Crouch e os seus primeiros álbuns também foram no estilo gospel tradicional dos Estados Unidos. Uma de sua primeiras aparições deu-se num programa de televisão em 1957 ao lado do lendário Nat King Cole, onde cantaram juntos a canção Blueberry Hill. A sua fama cresceu muito quando tocou um órgão no estilo gospel em Let it Be dos Beatles, em 1969. Em 1970 tocou com George Harrison no álbum All Things Must Pass. Logo depois, em 1971, novamente apareceu com George Harrison e Ringo Starr, além de vários outros gigantes do rock clássico, no Concerto para Bangladesh em Nova Iorque, um concerto beneficente onde tocou um dos seus maiores sucessos, a música de sua autoria, That's The Way God Planned It. O seu estilo então variou entre o gospel, o soul, o rhythm and blues, e o blues-rock e continuou colaborando com vários artistas além de gravar seus próprios projetos. Em 1978 fez o papel de Sgt. Pepper no filme de Robert Stigwood, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

Faleceu em 6 de junho de 2006 devido a complicações renais. Foi sepultado no Cemitério Inglewood Park, em Los Angeles, na Califórnia, Estados Unidos.

Tony Hadley (Londres, 2 de junho de 1960), é um cantor e compositor britânico que passou os anos 80 a cantar nos Spandau Ballet, naquela que foi uma das bandas de maior sucesso do new romantic. A sua voz é considerada uma das melhores da década, contribuindo para fazer de canções como True, Only When You Leave, How Many Lies ou Through The Barricades, entre muitas outras, clássicos obrigatórios de qualquer coletânea dos anos 80.

Quando os Spandau Ballet encerraram a atividade, em 1989, Hadley iniciou uma carreira a solo. Nunca conseguiu atingir o sucesso de outrora, apesar de, até hoje, manter uma agenda bastante preenchida (já fez digressões com os Go West e com Martin Fry, dos ABC) e continuar a gravar. Para além da música, Tony Hadley tem uma intensa atividade ao nível da beneficência. O seu gosto pelo futebol leva-o ainda a fazer parte da equipa de jogadores veteranos e celebridades do Arsenal. Em 2007, e durante três meses, esteve no musical Chicago, em cena no Cambridge Theatre de Londres, interpretando o papel do advogado corrupto Billy Flynn (que, no filme, pertencia a Richard Gere).

Marco Antonio Ribas mais conhecido como Marku Ribas (Pirapora, 19 de maio de 1947 - Belo Horizonte, 6 de abril de 2013) foi um cantor, compositor, ator, dançarino e percussionista brasileiro.

Seu estilo característico possui diversos elementos, entre eles: soul, samba, samba rock, jazz, funk, reisado, batuque e ritmos africanos.

Em 1985, Ribas participou no álbum Dirty Work da banda britânica Rolling Stones. Participou em vários filmes nacionais, entre eles, "Uma onda no ar" e "Batismo de Sangue" (como Carlos Marighella). Markú inovou ao utilizar o próprio corpo como instrumento de percussão. Em sua voz harmonias e melodias improvisadas em qualquer ritmo, o seu estilo de cantar e inventar palavras e frases com diferentes sonoridades influenciou e continua a influenciar diferentes gerações de músicos de diferentes estilos. Ativista político declarado, na luta por direitos sociais e contra o racismo, no auge do sucesso comercial da sua carreira, com o sucesso do samba rock e da soul music brasileira, rompe com as gravadoras multinacionais e parte para uma carreira independente. Marku Ribas faleceu na noite de sábado de 6 de abril de 2013, aos 65 anos, por causa de um cancro do pulmão.
