Born in Nashville and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, he later lived in Detroit while singing for Ric-Tic and Motown Records. He was backed by the band that became known as "Black Merda". Hawkins and Veasey of the group played on most of his early hits on the Ric Tic Label. Starr's songs "Twenty-Five Miles"
and "Stop the War Now" were also major successes, in 1969 and 1971
respectively. In the 1970s Starr moved to England, where he continued to
produce music and resided until his death.

negócios. A ironia é que Gaye foi morto por uma arma de calibre 12 que
ele próprio havia dado ao pai. O seu corpo foi cremado e as cinzas lançadas no Oceano Pacífico.
Marvin Pentz Sr. foi condenado a seis anos de prisão, após ser
declarado culpado por homicídio. A acusação de assassinato foi
abandonada após médicos descobrirem que estava com um tumor cerebral. Marvin Pentz Sr passou os últimos dias da sua vida num asilo, onde morreria de pneumonia em 1998.

Sign o' the Times (often stylized as Sign "☮︎" the Times) is the ninth studio album by American singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Prince. It was first released on March 30, 1987 as a double album by Paisley Park Records and Warner Bros. Records. The album is the follow-up to Parade and is Prince's first solo album following his disbanding of the Revolution. The album's songs were largely recorded during 1986 to 1987 in sessions for releases Prince ultimately aborted: Dream Factory, the pseudonymous Camille, and finally the triple album Crystal Ball. Prince eventually compromised with label executives and shortened the length of the release to a double album.
Many of the drum sounds on Sign o' the Times came from the Linn LM-1 drum machine, and Prince used the Fairlight CMI synthesizer to replace other instruments. Minimal instrumentation is heard on the stripped-down "Sign o’ the Times", the lead single. Four songs contain higher-pitched vocals to represent Prince's alter ego "Camille". The album's music touches on a varied range of styles, including funk, soul, psychedelic pop, electro, and rock.
Though not as commercially successful as Purple Rain, Sign o' the Times was Prince's most acclaimed album, being voted 1987's best album in the Pazz & Jop
critics poll. Included in many lists of the greatest albums of all
time, it has been appraised by many critics as Prince's best album,
ahead of Purple Rain. Writing for The Rolling Stone Album Guide
(2004), Michaelangelo Matos regarded it as "the most complete example
of [Prince's] artistry's breadth, and arguably the finest album of the
1980s". In 2017, the album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

William Harrison Withers, Jr. (Slab Fork, 4 de julho de 1938 - Los Angeles, 30 de março de 2020) conhecido pelo seu nome artístico de Bill Withers, foi um cantor e compositor norte-americano de blues e soul que atuou e gravou de 1970 a 1985.
Gravou vários sucessos importantes, incluindo "Lean on Me", "Ain't No
Sunshine", "Use Me", "Just the Two of Us", "Lovely Day" e "Grandma's
Hands". Withers ganhou três Grammy Awards e foi indicado para mais quatro. A sua vida foi o tema do documentário Still Bill, de 2009. Ele foi introduzido no Rock and Roll Hall of Fame em 2015.
Vida
Withers era o mais novo de seis irmãos nascidos na pequena cidade de mineração de carvão de Slab Fork, Virgínia Ocidental. Withers tinha treze anos de idade quando o seu pai morreu. Gago, foi criado pela sua avó em grande parte da infância.
Ele alistou-se na Marinha dos Estados Unidos aos dezoito anos, onde
esteve durante nove anos, período em que demonstrou interesse em cantar e
escrever músicas. Dispensado da Marinha em 1965, mudou-se para Los Angeles em 1967 para tentar uma carreira musical. Só alcançou o objetivo quatro anos depois, quando lançou o seu primeiro disco, Just as I Am,
que inclui hits como "Grandma's Hands" e "Ain't No Sunshine". Lançou
mais seis álbuns em sete anos e afastou-se dos palcos, continuando a
atuar como compositor.
Withers morreu no dia 30 de março de 2020 devido a problemas cardíacos,
aos 81 anos. Sobreviveram-lhe a sua mulher, Marcia, e dois filhos, Todd e Kori.
Khan chamou atenção do mundo da música pela primeira vez como cantora, na banda funkRufus, em meados dos anos 70. Com a ajuda de Stevie Wonder, despontou nas tops de sucesso pop e R&B em 1974, com a canção "Tell Me Something Good".
Em 1978 teve grande sucesso interpretando "I'm Every Woman", canção disco composta pela dupla Ashford & Simpson. Outras músicas de sucesso suas incluem "Do you love what you feel" (1979) e "I Feel for you" (1984).
A carreira de Chaka Khan tem sido irregular em termos de vendas de
discos, porém tem continuado a gravar e sua marca como ícone da música
negra norte-americana, especialmente do soul, é indiscutível. A sua versatilidade permitiu-lhe ainda fazer música de disco', hip hop, jazz, R&B e funk.
Sly Stone, nascido Sylvester Stewart (Dallas, 15 de março de 1944)
é um dos mais importantes artistas afro-americanos. Músico, compositor
e produtor, é mais conhecido pelo seu trabalho como líder dos Sly & the Family Stone, banda crucial na formação da sonoridade do soul, funk e música psicadélica das décadas de 60 e 70. O projeto Sly & the Family Stone foi iniciado em San Francisco, Califórnia.
Em 8 março de 1998, enquanto gravava um show para a televisão no Teatro Municipal de Niterói, Tim Maia se sentiu mal e foi internado com crise hipertensiva e edema pulmonar.
Um quadro grave de infeção desenvolveu-se nos dias seguintes e acabou
morrendo, com 55 anos, em 15 de março daquele ano, causando grande
comoção no Rio de Janeiro e em todo o Brasil.
Alwyn Lopez Jarreau (Milwaukee, 12 de março de 1940 - Los Angeles, 12 de fevereiro de 2017), conhecido popularmente como Al Jarreau, foi um cantor dos Estados Unidos. Versátil no seu estilo de cantar, foi premiado sete vezes com o Grammy, sendo o único a vencer o prémio em três categorias distintas: jazz, pop e R&B.
Filho de um pastor, Al Jarreau começou a cantar no coro da sua
igreja aos quatro anos de idade, ao mesmo tempo em que se apresentava
numa variedade de eventos em Milwaukee,
a sua cidade natal, ao lado dos irmãos ou sozinho. Mas a música não foi
a única atividade a qual se dedicou nessa época: sobressaiu-se,
também, nos desportos e nos estudos, onde, por suas notas, foi
considerado um aluno acima da média. Na juventude, já estudando no
respeitado Ripon College,
em Wisconsin, Jarreau continuou a cantar nos finais de semana e
feriados para se divertir, associando-se nessa época a um grupo local
chamado The Indigos.
Em 1975, após uma pequena temporada estendida no Bla Bla Cafe, ainda em Los Angeles, ele foi descoberto por pessoal da Warner Bros Records e assinou um contrato de gravação. O seu primeiro álbum lançado, We Got By, foi aclamado, por unanimidade, pelos críticos e deu-lhe fama internacional, chegando a receber um Grammy na Alemanha, facto que se repetiu com o lançamento de seu segundo álbum, Glow. O seu quarto álbum, All Fly Home, foi lançado em 1978 com muitos elogios na media, o que lhe rendeu um segundo Grammy nos EUA como melhor vocalista de Jazz. Nos anos 80, o seu álbum Breakin 'Away (1981), que inclui seu hit We're in This Love Together, foi campeão de vendas e lhe rendeu mais dois Grammy como o de Melhor Vocalista Pop Masculino e Melhor Vocalista Masculino de Jazz.
Em 1985,
esteve no Rock in Rio e cantou na mesma noite que James Taylor e George
Benson, para um público recorde naquela edição do show.
Em 1992, com o álbum Heaven and Earth, ele recebeu o seu quinto Grammy como Melhor Performance Vocal de R&B.
O ano de 1996 trouxe um novo desafio para sua carreira: Jarreau aceitou permanecer três meses na Broadway, protagonizando o musical Grease com muito sucesso.
Pela sua carreira, Al foi distinguido com uma estrela no Hollywood Walk of Fame, eternizando-o como um dos melhores cantores da sua geração.
Glenn Michael Hughes (The Bronx, New York City, July 18, 1950 – Manhattan, New York City, March 4, 2001) was an American singer who was the original "Leatherman" character in the disco group Village People from 1977 to 1996.
He graduated in 1968 from Chaminade High School, and then attended Manhattan College, where he was initiated as a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia music fraternity in 1969. He was interested in motorcycles, and was working as a toll collector at the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel when he responded to an advertisement by composer Jacques Morali seeking "macho" singers and dancers.
Hughes and other members of the band were given a crash course in the
synchronized dance choreography that later typified the group's live
performances.
Hughes sported an extravagant horseshoe moustache and wore his trademark leather outfit on and off stage and became one of the iconic figures of the disco era. According to Jack Fritscher, Jacques Morali drew his inspiration for the character from the gay BDSMleather bar and sex club the Mineshaft's dress code. Hughes frequented the club. He was a bike fanatic in real life and kept his motorcycle parked inside his house.
In 1996, Hughes retired from the group and launched a successful New York cabaret act until he was diagnosed with lung cancer. He had been a heavy smoker since he was a teenager. He was replaced by Eric Anzalone;
however, Hughes continued with management of the band. Hughes was named
on People Magazine's 1979 list of 'Most Beautiful People' and appeared in the television special The Playboy Mansion with Hugh Hefner.
Hughes died on March 4, 2001 at his Manhattan apartment from lung
cancer, aged 50. He was subsequently interred wearing his leatherman
outfit at Saint Charles Cemetery in Farmingdale, New York.

Nasceu num ambiente totalmente musical: a sua mãe e o seu pai cantaram numa igreja e os seus irmãos eram músicos, tocavam tambor e trombone.
Maceo e o seu irmão Melvin entraram para a banda de James Brown em 1964, com várias dificuldades, Maceo saiu da banda e regressou em 1973. Em 1975 alguns membros sairam da banda como Maceo Parker e Fred Wesley, entrando para banda funkGeorge Clinton's Parliament.
Maceo, mais uma vez com dificuldades em se manter na banda, saiu dos Parliament e voltou para a banda de James Brown, de 1984 a 1988. Em 1990, finalmente, começou uma carreira a solo, produzindo mais de sete discos.
Na música "Close to you", gravada ainda com a formação original dos The Doors, ou seja, com Jim Morrison, quem canta é Ray, não Jim. Após a morte de Jim, a banda The Doors lançou 2 álbuns, Full Circle e Other Voices, nos quais os vocais eram de Ray ou Robbie, o guitarrista.
Ray também formou a banda Nite City, que lançou dois álbuns: um álbum, homónimo, em 1976 e outro em 1978.
Ray Manzarek morreu no dia 20 de maio de 2013 na Clínica Romed em Rosenheim, Alemanha, após uma longa batalha contra um cancro no ducto biliar. Ele tinha 74 anos.
Na hora da morte estava rodeado pela sua esposa, Dorothy
Manzarek, e os seus irmãos, Rick e James Manzarek. O corpo de Manzarek foi cremado.
