(Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd) is the debut studio album by American rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd, released on August 13, 1973. Several of the album's tracks remain among the band's most well-known: "Gimme Three Steps", "Simple Man", "Tuesday's Gone", and "Free Bird", the last of which launched the band to national stardom.
The album was certified gold on December 18, 1974, and double platinum on July 21, 1987, by the RIAA. It peaked at 27 on the US Billboard 200 in 1975.
Joseph Michael "Dusty" Hill (Dallas, May 19, 1949 – Houston, July
28, 2021) was an American musician, singer, and songwriter, best known
as the bassist and secondary lead vocalist of the American rock group ZZ Top; he also played keyboards with the band. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as a member of ZZ Top, in 2004.
On January 29, 1986,
Collins was driving a new black Ford Thunderbird when he was involved
in a car accident that claimed the life of his girlfriend, Debra Jean
Watts, and paralyzed the guitarist from the waist down, with limited use
of his arms and hands. Collins pleaded no contest to vehicular manslaughter as well as driving under the influence of alcohol. Due to his injuries, he would never play guitar on stage again.
Collins' last performance with Lynyrd Skynyrd was at the band's first reunion after the plane crash
at the 1979 Volunteer Jam V in Nashville, Tennessee. All remaining
members of Lynyrd Skynyrd reunited officially in 1987, but Collins
served only as musical director, due to his paralysis.
As part of his plea bargain for the 1986 accident, Collins addressed
fans at every Skynyrd concert with an explanation of why he could not
perform, citing the dangers of drinking and driving, as well as drugs
and alcohol. Also because of Collins' accident, the band donated a sizable amount of concert proceeds from the 1987–88 tour to the Miami Project, which is involved in treatment of paralysis.
Collins founded Roll For Rock Wheelchair Events and Benefit Concerts in
1988 to raise awareness and to provide opportunities for those living
with spinal cord injuries and other physical disabilities.
Allen Collins died on January 23, 1990, from chronic pneumonia, a complication of the paralysis. He is buried beside his wife in Jacksonville, Florida.
In 2006, Collins was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Lynyrd Skynyrd.

In 2010, he formed the Tedeschi Trucks Band with his wife, blues singer/guitarist Susan Tedeschi. His musical style encompasses several genres and he has twice appeared on Rolling Stone's list of 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. He is the nephew of the late Butch Trucks, drummer for the Allman Brothers.

Second Helping reached #12 on the Billboard album charts. The RIAA certified it Gold on September 20, 1974, and Double Platinum on July 21, 1987.
Background
After the success of their debut album, (Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd), Lynyrd Skynyrd's fan base continued to grow rapidly throughout 1973, largely due to their opening slot on the Who's Quadrophenia tour in the United States. Second Helping features King, Collins and Rossington all collaborating with Ronnie Van Zant on the songwriting, and cemented the band's breakthrough.
Critical reception
Reviewing for Rolling Stone in 1974, Gordon Fletcher said Lynyrd Skynyrd performs a consistent style of Southern music-influenced blues rock similar to the Allman Brothers Band
but lacks that group's "sophistication and professionalism. If a song
doesn’t feel right to the Brothers, they work on it until it does; if it
isn’t right to Lynyrd Skynyrd, they are more likely to crank up their
amps and blast their way through the bottleneck." Fletcher concluded
that Second Helping is distinct from (Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd) "only by a certain mellowing out that indicates they may eventually acquire a level of savoirfaire to realize their many capabilities".
Robert Christgau was also lukewarm in Creem,
saying Lynyrd Skynyrd is "still a substantial, tasteful band, but I
have a hunch they blew their best stuff on the first platter."
Christgau warmed to the album later, however, reappraising it in Christgau's Record Guide: Rock Albums of the Seventies
(1981); he observed "infectious putdowns of rock businessmen, rock
journalists, and heroin", and "great formula" in general: "When it
rocks, three guitarists and a keyboard player pile elementary riffs and
feedback noises into dense combinations broken by preplanned solos,
while at quieter moments the spare vocabulary of the best Southern folk
music is evoked or just plain duplicated." In a retrospective review for AllMusic, Stephen Thomas Erlewine said Second Helping "replicated all the strengths" of the first album's expert Southern rock "but was a little tighter and a little more professional." Houston Press named it in #2 on its list "Five Essential Boogie-Rock Albums".
Wilkeson died in his sleep on July 27, 2001, at age 49 at the
Sawgrass Marriott Resort & Beach Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.
He was pronounced dead by St Johns County Fire Rescue Paramedic,
Charlie Galambos. Galambos reports that leaving the scene moments after
pronouncing Wilkeson dead, news had already leaked to the media, as he
listened to the report on local FM radio. Wilkeson was in town to
address charges of driving under the influence, for which he had been
cited earlier that year. A medical examiner reported that Wilkeson was
suffering from chronic liver and lung disease and died of natural
causes.
Wilkeson's death put the group in a difficult position since an
agreement with Ronnie Van Zant's widow, Judy Jenness, mandated that at
least three of Skynyrd's longtime members would have to appear in order
for the band to use the name Lynyrd Skynyrd. Jenness waived this
proviso, and the group continued with replacement bassist Ean Evans.
Lynyrd Skynyrd dedicated the song "Mad Hatter" from their 2003 album Vicious Cycle to Wilkeson's memory.
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Free bird If I leave here tomorrow Would you still remember me? For I must be travelling on, now, cause theres too many places Ive got to see. But, if I stayed here with you, girl, Things just couldnt be the same. cause Im as free as a bird now, And this bird you can not change. Lord knows, I cant change. Bye, bye, its been a sweet love. Though this feeling I cant change. But please dont take it badly, cause lord knows Im to blame. But, if I stayed here with you girl, Things just couldnt be the same. Cause Im as free as a bird now, And this bird youll never change. And this bird you can not change. Lord knows, I cant change. Lord help me, I cant change
