Faz hoje precisamente 50 anos que o Sporting bateu os cipriotas do Apoel, por 16-1, naquela que continua a ser a maior vitória de sempre em provas europeias.

Foi a 13 de novembro de 1963 que o Sporting viveu, no antigo Estádio José de Alvalade, uma das maiores noites de glória da história do clube, que ficaria até hoje no palmarés europeu.

Na 1ª mão dos oitavos de final da agora extinta Taça das Taças, os "leões", então comandados por Gentil Cardoso, 'massacraram' autenticamente os cipriotas do Apoel, num jogo que terminou com um resultado mais propício a hóquei em patins do que futebol: 16-1.

A estrela da partida foi o avançado Mascarenhas - hoje com 76 anos e a recuperar de um acidente vascular cerebral -, que conseguiu um hat trick... a dobrar, isto é, marcou seis golos. Os outros tentos foram da autoria de Mário Lino, Louro, José Pérides, Augusto, Figueiredo e Ferreira Pinto, jogadores que alinharam de início, tal como Carvalho, Pedro Gomes, Alfredo e Fernando Mendes.

Na segunda mão, o Sporting também venceu, mas por números mais modestos: 2-0. Curiosamente, ambas as mãos foram disputadas em Lisboa, por acordo entre os dois clubes, já que o Apoel não dispunha de recursos financeiros e teve de ser o Sporting a custear as deslocações.
