Leon Russell nasceu há 81 anos...


Leon Russell (born Claude Russell Bridges; Lawton, Oklahoma, April 2, 1942 – Nashville, Tennessee, November 13, 2016) was an American musician and songwriter who was involved with numerous bestselling records during his 60-year career that spanned multiple genres, including rock and roll, country, gospel, bluegrass, rhythm and blues, southern rock, blues rock, folk, surf and the Tulsa Sound.

He collaborated with many notable artists and recorded at least 31 albums and 430 songs. He wrote "Delta Lady", recorded by Joe Cocker, and organized and performed with Cocker's Mad Dogs & Englishmen tour in 1970. His "A Song for You", which was named to the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2018, has been recorded by more than 200 artists, and his song "This Masquerade" by more than 75.

As a pianist, he played in his early years on albums by the Beach Boys, Dick Dale, and Jan and Dean. On his first album, Leon Russell, in 1970, the musicians included Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr, and George Harrison. One of his early fans, Elton John, said that Russell was a "mentor" and an "inspiration". They recorded their album The Union in 2010, earning them a Grammy nomination.

Russell produced and played in recording sessions for Bob Dylan, Frank Sinatra, Ike & Tina Turner, the Rolling Stones, and many other artists. He wrote and recorded the hits "Tight Rope" and "Lady Blue". He performed at The Concert for Bangladesh in 1971, along with Harrison, Dylan, and Clapton; for this he earned a Grammy Award.

His recordings earned six gold records. He received two Grammy Awards from seven nominations. In 2011, he was inducted into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Hathaway teve seu primeiro contrato profissional com a gravadora Atlantic Records em 1969, gravando seu primeiro single "The Ghetto, Part I". No início dos anos 70, era considerado uma nova sensação na soul music. Na sua curta carreira lançou quatro álbuns de estúdio, sendo o primeiro "Everything is everything" em 1970.

No ano de 1973 foi-lhe diagnosticada esquizofrenia paranoica, sofrendo de fases de depressão desde os anos 60. Donny suicidou-se em 1979, perto do seu quarto de hotel, no Essex House Hotel, em Nova York.

Gravou com Roberta Flack a música "The Closer I Get to You e as ótimas "You Are My Heaven" e "Back Together Again".

Considerado um dos grandes nomes da soul music americana, foi homenageado com álbuns especiais após o seu falecimento, sendo influência artística e musical para as novas gerações.

Donny Hathaway nasceu há 70 anos

Donny Edward Hathaway (Chicago, Illinois, October 1, 1945 – New York City, January 13, 1979) was an American jazz, blues, soul, and gospel vocalist and musician. Hathaway contracted with Atlantic Records in 1969 and with his first single for the Atco label, "The Ghetto, Part I" in early 1970, Rolling Stone magazine "marked him as a major new force in soul music." His collaborations with Roberta Flack scored high on the charts and won him the Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals for the duet, "Where Is the Love" in 1973. At the height of his career Hathaway was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and was known to not take his prescribed medication regularly enough to properly control his symptoms. On January 13, 1979, Hathaway's body was found outside the luxury hotel Essex House in New York City; his death was ruled a suicide.
