O sucesso veio apenas em meados da década de 60, com o reencontro com o seu parceiro Art Garfunkel, no disco Wednesday Morning (1964), que continha a clássica faixa The sound of silence, tida por muitos como a melhor de seu repertório. Esse disco não fez sucesso imediato e a dupla Simon & Garfunkel foi novamente desfeita (embora momentaneamente). Paul Simon formou-se em Literatura, para por fim dedicar-se à música e, influenciado por Bob Dylan e a onda folk que varria a América, interpretar suas próprias composições.

Em 1965, Simon foi tentar a sorte no circuito folk de Londres e, ao retornar aos Estados Unidos, encontrou a canção "The sound of silence" no topo das paradas, numa versão com instrumentos elétricos feita por cima da versão acústica gravada no ano anterior. Retomou a parceria com Garfunkel e gravaram um álbum às pressas, acolhido por público e crítica. Lançaram juntos, no total, seis discos, todos disco de ouro por recorde de vendas. Seu folk rock harmonioso e delicado fez muito sucesso com canções como "America", "I am a rock", "The Boxer", "Bridge over troubled water", entre outras.

Porém, em 1968, ainda nas gravações de Bookends, as tensões com Garfunkel começam. Simon achava que se sentia demasiado pressionado e, também como já estava noivo, queria começar uma vida mais familiar. Logo, decidiram gravar apenas só mais um álbum. Bridge Over Troubled Waters, gravado em 1969 e, lançado em 1970, encerra uma carreira que já durava há 13 anos.

Após ter rompido com Garfunkel e, ter seguido carreira solo, produziu obra de grande qualidade, com um sucesso artístico enorme. Em 1974, realizou uma turnê acompanhado de uma banda gospel e um grupo de músicos peruanos, mostrando o seu interesse pela cultura de outras nações e que só aumentou com o passar dos anos, gravando com artistas de vários países.

Porém, em 1975, reaviva a amizade com Art Garfunkel e, os dois voltam a trabalhar juntos, na canção My Little Town, do álbum Still Crazy After All These Years. Não tendo produzido mais originais, os dois continuaram a trabalhar juntos ainda hoje, dando concertos memoráveis em toda a parte.

Em 1977, tenta mudar de rumo artístico, iniciando uma carreira como ator. Assim, foi convidado por Woody Allen para participar no filme Annie Hall. Devido ao sucesso do papel, três anos depois, o realizador Robert M. Young convida-o para escrever o argumento para One Trick Pony e, também para o papel principal. Porém, Simon viu que não era no cinema que estava a sua vocação e abandona a carreira de ator, voltando à música.

Em 1981, junta-se de novo com Art Garfunkel e, os dois dão um memorável concerto no Central Park de Nova Iorque, no dia 19 de setembro desse ano. Além de interpretarem os temas que compuseram juntos, interpretaram também temas a solo de cada um. O Disco/DVD é até hoje um dos grandes êxitos da dupla.

The Concert in Central Park is the first live album by American folk rock duo Simon & Garfunkel, released on February 16, 1982, by Warner Bros. Records. It was recorded on September 19, 1981, at a free benefit concert on the Great Lawn in Central Park, New York City, where the pair performed in front of 500,000 people. A film of the event was shown on TV and released on video. Proceeds went toward the redevelopment and maintenance of the park, which had deteriorated due to lack of municipal funding. The concert and album marked the start of a three-year reunion of Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel.

The concept of a benefit concert in Central Park had been proposed by Parks Commissioner Gordon Davis and promoter Ron Delsener. Television channel HBO agreed to carry the concert, and they worked with Delsener to decide on Simon and Garfunkel as the appropriate act for this event. Besides hits from their years as a duo, their 21-song set list included material from their solo careers, and covers. Amongst them were "The Sound of Silence", "Mrs. Robinson", "The Boxer" and Simon's "Late in the Evening", with the show concluding with a reprise of the latter. Ongoing personal tensions between the duo led them to decide against a permanent reunion, despite the success of the concert and a subsequent world tour.

The album and film were released the year after the concert. Simon and Garfunkel's performance was praised by music critics and the album was commercially successful, peaking No. 6 on the Billboard 200 album charts and being certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The duo had risen to fame two years prior with the albums Sounds of Silence and Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme and the soundtrack album for the 1967 film The Graduate.

Bookends is a concept album that explores a life journey from childhood to old age. Side one of the album marks successive stages in life, the theme serving as bookends to the life cycle. Side two largely consists of unused material for The Graduate soundtrack. Simon's lyrics concern youth, disillusionment, relationships, old age, and mortality. Much of the material was crafted alongside producer John Simon, who joined the recording when Paul Simon suffered from writer's block. The album was recorded gradually over the period of a year, with production speeding up around the later months of 1967.

Initial sales for Bookends were substantial in the US, and the album produced the number-one single "Mrs. Robinson".
