Foi a primeira grande batalha que ocorreu em território da União. A Batalha de Antietam caracteriza-se por ser o dia mais sangrento da história americana, onde mais de 23 mil americanos - incluindo aqueles lutando pelos Estados Confederados da América - perderam a vida. A vitória da batalha por parte da União deu ao então presidente dos Estados Unidos da América, e líder das forças da União, Abraham Lincoln, suficiente confiança para proclamar sua Proclamação de Emancipação, em 1 de janeiro de 1863.
