"Rethinking the Sustainable City: Exploring the Potential of Local Social Enterprises"

"The problems of global warming, resource depletion, persistent pollution, and habitat destruction suggest that human civilization is no longer adapted to its global habitat. The technology for achieving a transformation to a more sustainable relationship with the environment already exists in the form of green buildings, renewable energy, public transportation, and sustainable agriculture. However, the implementation of the transformation is proceeding at a very slow pace, and it occurs alongside ongoing growth of environmental deposits and withdrawals. This talk examines the argument that an economic system based on the large, publicly traded corporation with its emphasis on short-term growth creates a growth logic that is not adapted to the global ecology. The emergence of the localist movement in the United States—around small businesses, nonprofits, and local government agencies—is examined for its potential to generate a more liveable human habitat and an economy that is more adapted to life within the planet's carrying capacity."

M.A. e PhD em Antropologia pela Universidade de Cornell, sob a orientação de James A. Boon e supervisão de Thomas Holloway, David Holmberg e Roberto DaMatta. Antigo presidente (2000-2004) do Departamento de STS / Science and Technology Studies do Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Detentor do prémio Diana Forsythe (2000) atribuído pelo Committee of the Anthropology of Science and Technology, Society for the Anthropology of Work, e American Anthropological Association, para o melhor livro no espírito do trabalho antropológico feminista de Diana Forsythe sobre trabalho, ciência e/ou tecnologia. Investigador em projectos anteriores de investigação e de desenvolvimento curricular da National Science Foundation e do Departamento Americano de Educação, nomeadamente "Design, Innovation, and Society", "Sustainable Technology, the Politics of Design, and Localism", "Cross-Cultural Studies of Science and Technology" e "Public Understanding of Science". Professor convidado na Universidade de Wollongong na Austrália, na Faculdade Bezerra de Menezes e na Universidade Federal Fluminense no Brasil. É autor de inúmeros livros e publicações, destacando-se Spirits and Scientists: Ideology, Spiritism, and Brazilian Culture (Penn State University Press, 1991), Science and Technology in a Multicultural World (Columbia University Press, 1995), Can Bacteria Cause Cancer? (NY University Press, 1997) e ainda Alternative Pathways in Science and Industry: Activism, Innovation, and the Environment in an Era of Globalization (MIT Press, 2007). Os seus domínios de especialização e interesse compreendem a antropologia, história e sociologia da ciência e da tecnologia; os movimentos ambientais, medicinais e religiosos; as medicinas alternativas e a modernidade; as tecnologias sustentáveis, o localismo, e a teoria e prática do design.
