Rachel Louise Carson (Springdale, 27 de maio de 1907 - Silver Spring, 14 de abril de 1964) escritora, cientista bióloga e ecologista norte-americana que, através da publicação do livro Silent Spring (1962) ajudou a lançar a consciência ambiental moderna.

Desde a infância - influenciada pela mãe - mostrou-se interessada pela Natureza.

Em 1929, graduou-se na Pensilvânia College for Women, estudou na Woods Hole Marine Biological Laboratory e depois formou-se em Zoologia na Universidade John Hopkins, em 1932.

Foi contratada pelo governo americano para escrever boletins para a rádio durante a Depressão e também escrevia artigos sobre história natural para o Jornal Baltimore Sun.

Em 1936, torna-se editora–chefe de todas as publicações do renomeado U.S. Fish e Wildlife (Departamento de Pesca e Vida Selvagem). As suas primeiras publicações foram sobre os estudos das espécies e seres vivos que habitavam os mares e oceanos como: Under The Sea Wind (Sob o Vento do Mar – 1941), The Sea Around Us (O Mar Que Nos Rodeia – 1951), que foi sucesso nacional e internacional e foi traduzido para 30 diferentes idiomas.
