Começou a sua carreira como bailarino na companhia do irmão Uday Shankar. Aos 18 anos iniciou os seus estudos de sitar. Famoso em todo o mundo, tocou no Woodstock junto de grandes mestres da música. É o pai de Norah Jones, artista contemporânea de jazz e de Anoushka Shankar, a quem ensinou a arte do sitar. Gravou um disco produzido por George Harrison, o "Chants of India". Ele foi chamado por George Harrison para tocar sitar no seu quarto enquanto morria.

Famoso em todo o mundo, tocou no Woodstock junto com grandes mestres da música como Janis Joplin, e Jefferson Airplane. É também o pai de Norah Jones, famosa artista contemporânea de jazz e de Anoushka Shankar, a quem ensinou a arte do sitar. Teve grande influência na fase psicodélica dos Beatles, e após o fim da banda, gravou um disco produzido por George Harrison, o "Chants of India".
