Martin Lee Gore (Dagenham, London, England, 23 July 1961) is an English songwriter, singer, guitarist and keyboardist, and also producer, remixer and DJ. He is a founding member of Depeche Mode and has written the majority of their songs. His work now spans over three decades. Gore's best-known compositions include hits such as "Personal Jesus", "Enjoy the Silence", "I Feel You", "People Are People", "Everything Counts", "Shake the Disease" and "Never Let Me Down Again".

In addition to composing music and writing lyrics for Depeche Mode songs, he has also been lead vocalist on several, and usually solo (some examples are, "Somebody", "A Question of Lust" and "Home"), as evidenced by most of the Depeche Mode concerts, and has been a backing vocalist on many others.

In 1999 he received the Ivor Novello Award from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors for "International Achievement", the Moog Innovation Award "for his many contributions to the exploration of sound in popular music" in 2019, and became a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member in late 2020 with fellow Depeche Mode members, Andrew Fletcher and Dave Gahan.

Biografia

Muito popular pela sua voz poderosa, expressão, animação e interação com o público nos shows, também lançou um disco a solo em 2003, chamado “Paper Monsters”, onde demonstra a sua criatividade e habilidade como compositor e músico. Até uma harmónica e um piano de criança (da filha dele) são tocados no álbum.

O seu histórico de asneiras inclui roubo de carros, vandalismo, drogas e graffitis na cidade de Basildon, Inglaterra. Antes de fazer 14 anos, já tinha ido para o tribunal de menores três vezes, possivelmente pelos problemas familiares que sofria na época, como a descoberta do seu verdadeiro pai. Já foi preso também por posse de drogas (heroína).

Foi convidado por Vince Clarke para fazer parte dos Depeche Mode, após impressioná-lo com a sua performance com a canção "Heroes", de David Bowie, em 1980. Foi Dave que sugeriu o nome "Depeche Mode" para a banda, depois de ter visto uma revista francesa com o mesmo nome. Dave também compôs, dentro dos Depeche Mode, as músicas "Suffer Well", "I Want It All" e "Nothing is Impossible", do álbum Playing The Angel. "Suffer Well" virou um single.

O cantor possui álbuns solo lançados, sendo o seu primeiro trabalho o álbum Paper Monsters, de 2003 e o segundo, Hourglass, de 2007. Em 2012 e 2015, respectivamente, ele também contribuiu com vocais e letras para os álbuns The Light the Dead See e Angels & Ghosts do Soulsavers.

David é casado com Jennifer Sklias-Gahan, de quem tem uma filha, Stella Rosa. Do seu primeiro casamento, com Joanne, tem um filho, Jack. Já trabalhou como pedreiro, repositor de supermercado e vendedor de bebidas.
