Riley Ben King, mais conhecido como B. B. King, (Itta Bena, 16 de setembro de 1925 – Las Vegas, 14 de maio de 2015) foi um guitarrista de blues, compositor e cantor norte-americano. O "B. B." do seu nome artístico significa Blues Boy, o seu pseudónimo como moderador na rádio W. Foi considerado, ao lado de Eric Clapton e Jimi Hendrix, um dos melhores guitarristas do mundo pela revista norte-americana Rolling Stone. Ao longo da sua carreira, B.B. King foi distinguido com 15 prémios Grammy, tendo sido o criador de um estilo musical único e que faria dele um dos músicos mais respeitados e influentes de blues, tendo ganho o epíteto de Rei dos Blues.

Era apreciado por seus solos, nos quais, ao contrário de muitos guitarristas, preferia usar poucas notas. Certa vez, B.B. King teria dito: "posso fazer uma nota valer por mil".

Paul Samwell-Smith faz hoje 83 anos

Paul Samwell-Smith (born Paul Smith, 8 May 1943, in Richmond, Surrey) is an English musician and record producer. He was a founding member and the bassist of the 1960s English rock band the Yardbirds, which launched leading guitarists Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page to fame. As a youth, Samwell-Smith attended Hampton School with Yardbirds drummer Jim McCarty.

While in the Yardbirds, he co-produced and engineered much of their music, working with record producers such as Mickie Most, Simon Napier-Bell and Giorgio Gomelsky. Samwell-Smith was a major contributor to the original tracks written by the Yardbirds during his tenure with the band. He left the group in June 1966 to pursue a career as a record producer. 

 

The Yardbirds

In late May 1963, he formed the Yardbirds with Keith Relf, Anthony Topham, Chris Dreja, and Jim McCarty. During this period his primary instrument was a short-scale Epiphone Rivoli bass. He played on the UK albums, Five Live Yardbirds and Yardbirds (also known as Roger the Engineer) and on the US albums For Your Love, Having a Rave Up, and Over Under Sideways Down (which was Roger the Engineer retitled for the US market), all released on Epic Records. He provided background vocals on many songs like "Good Morning Little School Girl", "For Your Love", "Heart Full of Soul", "Evil Hearted You", and more. He composed the Gregorian chant arrangements and lyrics of the songs "Still I'm Sad" and "Turn Into Earth". While in the Yardbirds he started working on the technical side in the studio. In 1966, becoming tired of touring and wanting to focus on production, he left the Yardbirds and was replaced by Jimmy Page. The last Yardbirds album he played on was Roger the Engineer.

Regarding Samwell-Smith's years with the Yardbirds, a 2020 article in Guitar World opined: "As a bassist, Paul Samwell-Smith was solid and occasionally prominently inventive. No doubt, had he stuck to that he’d have been feted as an influence by many."

In the early 1980s, Samwell-Smith played in the Yardbirds reunion band Box of Frogs with original Yardbird members Chris Dreja and Jim McCarty. The Box of Frogs did not tour because Chris Dreja was busy with his photography and Samwell-Smith was busy in the recording studio.

He was inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Yardbirds in 1992.

Producer

He went on to become a successful producer with credits including Cat Stevens' albums Tea for the Tillerman (1970), Teaser and the Firecat (1971) and Catch Bull at Four (1972). An article in The Washington Post praised Samwell-Smith's "deft, understated touch" on these recordings as a primary reason for their commercial success, and commented: "The chamber ensemble palette Samwell-Smith employed, consisting mainly of acoustic guitars, piano, upright bass and hand percussion, and the refined arrangements he crafted, perfectly complement the interior landscapes that Stevens was exploring. Stevens had the pure, raw talent, certainly, but it was Samwell-Smith who seemed to understand how best to transmute and position that talent for maximum artistic impact." Samwell-Smith also produced recordings for Jethro Tull, Carly Simon, Renaissance, Murray Head, Chris de Burgh, Beverley Craven, Toto Coelo, Illusion and Claire Hamill. Other production credits include two of Amazing Blondel's albums for Island Records; the first and second albums by All About Eve for Mercury; and "American Tune" (1973 single) with Paul Simon. 

 

Film

Paul Samwell-Smith was the musical producer for the film Harold and Maude in 1971, with music written by Cat Stevens, which became a cult classic. In addition, two decades later, he produced Postcards from the Edge in 1990, as a music sound recording and recording supervisor.

Joseph Leonard Bonamassa (New Hartford, New York, May 8, 1977) is an American blues rock guitarist, singer and songwriter. He started his career at age twelve, when he opened for B.B. King. Since 2000, Bonamassa has released fifteen solo albums through his independent record label J&R Adventures, of which eleven have reached No. 1 on the Billboard Blues chart.

Bonamassa has played alongside many notable blues and rock artists, and has earned three Grammy Awards nominations. Among guitarists, he is known for his extensive collection of vintage guitars and amplifiers.

In 2020, Bonamassa created Keeping the Blues Alive Records, an independent record label that promotes and supports the talent of blues musicians. Current artists include Dion DiMucci, Joanne Shaw Taylor, Joanna Connor, Larry McCray and others. Bonamassa produces and collaborates on many of the projects.

Tony Martin - 69 anos

 

Anthony Philip Harford (Birmingham, 19 de abril de 1957), mais conhecido pelo nome artístico Tony Martin, é um músico e vocalista britânico de heavy metal.

Já fez parte de diversas bandas e projetos musicais, sendo notória a sua passagem pelos Black Sabbath, banda onde permaneceu quase dez anos (é o vocalista com maior tempo de permanência, depois de Ozzy Osbourne).

Apesar de se apresentar exclusivamente como vocalista, Tony Martin é um multi-instrumentista, como confirmou numa entrevista. Entre os instrumentos que toca, podem ser citados: guitarra, baixo, violino, teclado, harmónica, gaita de foles e flauta de pã. Nos seus álbuns a solo, costuma também gravar a maioria dos instrumentos, como por exemplo em Scream, do ano de 2005. A sua primeira aparição como artista a solo foi em 1992, com o disco Back Where I Belong.

Gerald "Gerry" Rafferty (Paisley, 16 de abril de 1947 - Bournemouth, 4 de janeiro de 2011) foi um cantor, compositor e músico escocês.

   

Começou a sua carreira como músico de rua e o seu primeiro grupo foi os Humblebums e, em seguida, lançou um álbum a solo. Em 1972 formou um novo grupo, os Stealers Wheel, ao lado de Joe Egan e, em 1975, o grupo desfez-se. A canção mais conhecida dele é "Baker Street, incluído no disco "City to city", datado de 1978. Outra música conhecida é Stuck In The Middle With You, composta por Rafferty para os Stealers Wheel, e que fez parte da banda sonora do filme de Quentin Tarantino, Cães Danados.

Second Helping is the second studio album by Lynyrd Skynyrd, released on April 15, 1974. It features the band's biggest hit single, "Sweet Home Alabama", an answer song to Neil Young's "Alabama" and "Southern Man", which reached #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in August 1974, as well as drummer Bob Burns' final recordings.

Second Helping reached #12 on the Billboard album charts. The RIAA certified it Gold on September 20, 1974, and Double Platinum on July 21, 1987.

 

Background

After the success of their debut album, (Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd), Lynyrd Skynyrd's fan base continued to grow rapidly throughout 1973, largely due to their opening slot on the Who's Quadrophenia tour in the United States. Second Helping features King, Collins and Rossington all collaborating with Ronnie Van Zant on the songwriting, and cemented the band's breakthrough.

 

Critical reception

Reviewing for Rolling Stone in 1974, Gordon Fletcher said Lynyrd Skynyrd performs a consistent style of Southern music-influenced blues rock similar to the Allman Brothers Band but lacks that group's "sophistication and professionalism. If a song doesn’t feel right to the Brothers, they work on it until it does; if it isn’t right to Lynyrd Skynyrd, they are more likely to crank up their amps and blast their way through the bottleneck." Fletcher concluded that Second Helping is distinct from (Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd) "only by a certain mellowing out that indicates they may eventually acquire a level of savoirfaire to realize their many capabilities". Robert Christgau was also lukewarm in Creem, saying Lynyrd Skynyrd is "still a substantial, tasteful band, but I have a hunch they blew their best stuff on the first platter."

Christgau warmed to the album later, however, reappraising it in Christgau's Record Guide: Rock Albums of the Seventies (1981); he observed "infectious putdowns of rock businessmen, rock journalists, and heroin", and "great formula" in general: "When it rocks, three guitarists and a keyboard player pile elementary riffs and feedback noises into dense combinations broken by preplanned solos, while at quieter moments the spare vocabulary of the best Southern folk music is evoked or just plain duplicated." In a retrospective review for AllMusic, Stephen Thomas Erlewine said Second Helping "replicated all the strengths" of the first album's expert Southern rock "but was a little tighter and a little more professional." Houston Press named it in #2 on its list "Five Essential Boogie-Rock Albums".

Black Rose: A Rock Legend is the ninth studio album by Irish rock band Thin Lizzy. Released in 13 April 1979, it has been described as one of the band's "greatest, most successful albums". It was the first time that blues rock guitarist Gary Moore remained in Thin Lizzy long enough to record an album - after previous brief stints in 1974 and 1977 with the band. The album peaked at No. 2 on the UK charts - making it the band's highest-charting album in the UK. It was their fourth consecutive album to be certified Gold by the BPI.

Cozy Powell morreu há vinte e oito anos...

 

Cozy Powell (Cirencenter, Gloucestershire, 29 de dezembro de 1947 - Bristol, 5 de Abril de 1998) foi um famoso e aclamado baterista britânico.

Muito solicitado em gravações de pop e rock, Cozy Powell foi quase uma lenda no estilo pesado de tocar bateria, tocando ao lado de nomes como Rainbow, Whitesnake, Mickie Most, Black Sabbath, Keith Emerson, Greg Lake (Emerson, Lake & Powell), ou mesmo no seu trabalho a solo, como o single "Dance with the Devil", que foio seu maior hit no Reino Unido, em 1974.

Powell começou a sua carreira profissional em 1965 com os The Sorcerers, eventualmente tocando com Jeff Beck, depois que este deixou os Yardbirds. Em 1971, formou a banda Bedlam, chegando a lançar um álbum, mas abandonou este projeto para produzir singles, como o "Dance with the Devil", faixa instrumental que chegou à 3ª posição no Reino Unido em 1974. Mais tarde ele formou os Cozy Powell's Hammer, que acabaram em 1975. Nesse mesmo ano juntou-se aos Rainbow, do guitarrista Ritchie Blackmore, ficando até 1980. Sempre muito requisitado, ele alternava os seus trabalhos entre sessões de estúdio e concertos ao vivo com uma grande variedade de bandas como os Michael Schenker Group, Whitesnake e Black Sabbath, nunca permanecendo em nenhuma banda durante muito tempo. Em 1996, ele trabalhou numa longa turnê com os Fleetwood Mac.

Em abril de 1998, Cozy Powell havia abandonado uma turnê com Yngwie Malmsteen, por se ter magoado no pé. Pouco depois, a 5 de abril, Cozy morreu num acidente de automóvel enquanto dirigia o seu carro, um Saab 9000, a cerca de 170 km/h,  com chuva, na Auto Estrada M4, próximo da cidade de Bristol, na Inglaterra. De acordo com uma reportagem da BBC, no momento do acidente o nível alcoólico de Cozy estava acima do limite legal. Ele não usava cinto de segurança e estava a conversar com a sua então namorada, Sharon Reeve, ao telemóvel, quando ela ouviu o barulho do acidente.

Saudades de Jeff Healey...

Jeff Healey nasceu há sessenta anos...

   

Norman Jeffrey "Jeff" Healey (Toronto, 25 de março de 1966 - Toronto, 2 de março de 2008) foi um guitarrista canadiano. Cego desde o primeiro ano de vida, devido à um retinoblastoma, Healey destacou-se pelo seu trabalho na área dos blues rock, em conjunto com a The Jeff Healey Band e, posteriormente, no jazz. Conhecido pelo seu jeito pouco comum de tocar guitarra - com ela sobre as suas pernas, como um piano - e pela sua participação no filme Road House. Jeff colecionou, ao longo de sua carreira, colaborações com grandes nomes dos blues, como Albert Collins, Stevie Ray Vaughan, B.B. King e George Harrison.

Jeff morreu a 2 de março de 2008, vítima de um cancro no pulmão.

The Dark Side of the Moon (ou pela abreviatura DSotM) é um álbum conceptual de 1973 dos Pink Floyd, que fala sobre as pressões da vida, como tempo, dinheiro, guerra, loucura e morte. Este álbum está na lista dos 200 álbuns definitivos no Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

É considerado por muitos críticos e fãs dos Pink Floyd como sendo a obra prima da banda, ultrapassando mesmo The Wall. O álbum foi um marco do rock progressivo com músicas que eram bem aceitas pelas rádios comerciais para execução, tais como "Money", "Time", e "Us and them". O álbum é uma ponte entre o blues rock clássico e a nova (na época) música eletrónica. No entanto são os tons mais suaves e as nuances líricas e musicais que fazem com que este álbum seja uma obra à parte.

Estima-se que 1 em cada 14 pessoas com menos de 50 anos, nos EUA tenha uma cópia deste álbum. O tema de Dark Side of the Moon terá sido em parte precipitado pela saída de Syd Barrett, um dos membros fundadores dos Pink Floyd.

O álbum contém alguns dos mais complicados usos dos instrumentos e efeitos sonoros existentes à época, incluindo o som de alguém correndo à volta de um microfone e a gravação de múltiplos relógios a tocar ao mesmo tempo. Uma versão quadrifónica, foi também editada com uma nova mistura. Durante as gravações os Pink Floyd desenvolveram novos efeitos tais como gravações em duas pistas das vozes e guitarras (permitindo a David Gilmour harmonizar consigo próprio), vozes dobradas e efeitos inéditos para aquela época, como ecos e separação dos sons entre os canais. Até hoje, Dark Side of the Moon é uma referência para os audiófilos que o usam para testar a fidelidade dos equipamentos de áudio.

Outra característica do álbum são os trechos de diálogos entre as faixas. Os Pink Floyd entrevistaram várias pessoas, perguntando-lhes coisas relacionadas com os temas centrais do álbum, como a violência e a morte. O roadie "Roger The Hat" aparece em mais que uma ("giv'em a quick, short, sharp, shock…", "live for today, gone tomorrow, that's me…"). A frase no fim do álbum "there is no dark side of the moon really… matter of fact it is all dark" é do porteiro do estúdio de Abbey Road, o irlandês Jerry Driscoll. Paul McCartney foi também entrevistado mas as suas respostas foram consideradas demasiadamente cautelosas para serem incluídas

Dark Side of the Moon é o álbum que ficou por mais tempo na Billboard 200, tendo permanecido 795 semanas consecutivas e mais de 1000 semanas no total, pouco mais de 15 anos. O álbum chegou a nº 1 nos EUA, Bélgica e França, até em 2002, 30 anos após o seu lançamento, foram vendidas nos EUA mais de 400.000 cópias, fazendo do álbum o 200º mais vendido desse ano. Em 2003 mais de 800.000 cópias do híbrido SACD de Dark Side of the Moon foram vendidas apenas nos EUA. "Time", "Money", e "Us and them" foram bastante tocadas nas rádios (sendo o single "Money" um sucesso de vendas também).

Dark Side of the Moon foi editado em "Super Audio Compact Disc" (SACD), com uma mistura de som surround 5.1 DSD a partir das fitas de estúdio de 16 faixas, por ocasião do 30º aniversário do seu lançamento. Tornou-se algo surpreendente o facto de James Guthrie ter sido chamado para fazer a mistura do SACD em vez de Alan Parsons, engenheiro do LP original. Esta edição do 30º aniversário ganhou 4 prémios do "Surround Music Awards" de 2003.

Os ZZ Top lançaram o álbum Eliminator há 43 anos

   

Eliminator is the eighth studio album by American rock band ZZ Top. It was released on March 23, 1983, by Warner Bros. Records, and rose high on the charts in many countries. Four hit singles were released—"Gimme All Your Lovin'" which reached the American Top 40, "Sharp Dressed Man", "TV Dinners" and their most successful single, "Legs". Eliminator is ZZ Top's most commercially successful release, with sales of 11 million and diamond certification in the US.

Since El Loco in 1981, the bandleader, Billy Gibbons, had been moving ZZ Top's boogie and blues rock style towards the popular new wave style. For Eliminator, he increased the tempo and used more synthesizers and drum machines, producing a "tighter" album with a steady, driving beat. The pre-production engineer Linden Hudson collaborated with Gibbons in Texas on the tempo and songs. The producer Bill Ham and the engineer Terry Manning joined Gibbons in Memphis, Tennessee, to edit the songs, replacing much of the contributions of bassist Dusty Hill and drummer Frank Beard. Ham claimed the album was solely the work of ZZ Top, but in 1986 Hudson won a lawsuit establishing himself as composer of the song "Thug".

Music videos for "Gimme All Your Lovin'", "Sharp Dressed Man" and "Legs" received regular rotation on MTV and helped ZZ Top gain popularity with a younger base. A customized 1933 Ford coupe, depicted on the album cover, appeared in the videos. Following Eliminator's release, ZZ Top embarked on a worldwide concert tour.

The video for "Legs" earned the band the MTV Video Music Award for Best Group. Rolling Stone named Eliminator number 398 on its list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. It was listed at number 39 in The 100 Greatest Albums of the 80s, and it was also included in Robert Dimery's book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. A remastered version was released in 2008.

Several notable blues guitarists have had a significant influence on Vaughan's playing style, including the "Three Kings" (Albert, Freddie, and B.B. King) and Johnny "Guitar" Watson.
